Season Six of this powerful, gripping and award-winning documentary series opens with Gabe, a 23-year-old who as a young boy was abandoned by his mother in India. Despite a happy upbringing with his adoptive family – a loving Christian couple from Oregon and their five biological children – Gabe secretly felt like an outsider. In high school, he began resenting his religious upbringing and in his depression began to rebel, turning to marijuana, cocaine and eventually heroin. His family fears his addictions will lead to his death. Everything You Need to Know About Intervention, Season 6

Intervention is an American television reality show dealing with the struggles faced by many different kinds of addicts. Each episode follows one or two participants, each of whom has a substance dependence or other mentally and/or physically damaging problem. The subjects believe they are being filmed for a documentary on their problem, but their situations are actually being documented in anticipation of an intervention by family and/or friends. During the intervention, each participant is given an ultimatum: go into rehabilitation immediately, or risk losing contact, income, or other privileges from the loved ones who instigated the intervention. Often, other tactics are used to persuade the addicted person into treatment, which vary depending on the situation; some of these include threats to invoke outstanding arrest warrants, applying for custody of the addict's children, foreclosing on the addict's property, and break-up of marriages or other relationships. The producers usually follow up months later to monitor the addicted person's progress and film it for "follow-up" episodes of the series or for shorter "web updates" available on the show's website.

Donald is a 38-year-old crack addict from Long Island, New York. When he was five, Donald's parents divorced after his Catholic father refused to accept his mother's conversion to Jehovah's Witnesses. Donald longed for a strong father figure, but his father had little contact with him. As a young man, Donald was a gifted boxer and won two gold medals in the Junior Olympics, but in the end, Donald chose drugs over his career. He began selling drugs and joined a violent gang where he was known as "The Enforcer." He became increasingly addicted to crack, then turned to stealing to support his habit. Now, his 21 year-old son, also a gifted athlete, is angry and estranged because Donald wasn't there for him growing up. Donald's girlfriend Carolyn just had their baby and Donald has a second chance to be the caring father he always dreamed of being. But his crack use is spiraling out of control and he's reduced to living in his mother's basement. His mother and sister are praying for him to give up drugs and his girlfriend is afraid to leave him alone with their baby. They are all convinced that without an intervention, Donald will die.

Nikki, 36, of Bronx, New York was raised in a close-knit family of strong black women. Nikki's mother, who saw her own mother struggling with poverty and alcohol, was determined to have a better life for her and her children. Because Nikki's mother worked full time while also going to college, Nikki was mainly raised by her grandmother. Nikki was also close with her father, although he was a drug addict and was in and out of Nikki's life. Nikki excelled in school and dance and took pride in taking care of her younger sister. At age 12, Nikki's grandmother died leaving Nikki devastated. Nikki's mother moved the family to Maryland with the hope of providing them a better home and neighborhood. Nikki, however, began hanging out with a rebellious crowd, skipping school and experimenting with drugs. After discovering that Nikki was using crack, Nikki's mother put her in a drug rehabilitation program. Nikki left the program early and moved back to New York to reunite with her father. Nikki continued to use drugs and had two daughters. After Nikki's youngest daughter was diagnosed with depression at age 3, Nikki stopped using crack but was soon addicted to methadone and prescription pills. Nikki's daughters desperately want to have a relationship with their mother, but they know her addiction has taken over her life. Nikki's family believes an intervention is their last chance to save Nikki's life and to give her daughters their mother back.

Later in the season, meet Austin, an expectant father – and alcoholic – getting in as much partying as he can before his baby is born, and Darick, a divorcee who, once he learned he wasn’t the biological father to his daughter, turned to drugs. Not the first addict in his family, Darick is being enabled by relatives who feel if they don’t allow his habit, they’ll have to bury him.
