It's Manny's birthday and the family is gathering at a restaurant to celebrate, though Manny himself is depressed about getting older. It's Phil and Claire's anniversary, and when the kids go to surprise them with breakfast in bed, they get a surprise of their own. Jay and Gloria's plans for a Vegas vacation are ruined because of a brutally honest email accidentally sent to Claire, and Mitchell and Cam try to get into a new restaurant owned by a mom at Lily's preschool.
Claire and Phil decide to reprise their role-playing adventure from last year's Valentine's Day. Meanwhile, Jay's surprise plans for Gloria keeps getting interrupted, and a secret admirer comes between Cameron and Mitchell.
The guest list for Lily's princess-themed birthday party gets a little out of hand when Mitchell decides to invite his mom, much to Claire's dismay, and disinvite Fizbo, much to Cameron's dismay. Things get even more strange when DeDe shows up with Claire's old high school boyfriend in tow, and Jay and Gloria each turn to their own unique methods of dealing with this gathering of misfits.

Claire runs herself ragged trying to fix the relationship between Haley and Alex, while Phil sneaks off to the spa. Luke becomes friends with a curmudgeon old neighbor, which does not please Phil and Claire. Meanwhile, Gloria and Manny try to get Jay to join them at the symphony, but in an attempt to avoid the concert, he instead ends up with Mitchell and Cameron on their "boys' night out" while Haley babysits for Lily.
Cameron is overzealous in his planning of the spring musical performance at Luke and Manny's school. Jay's brother visits while Phil convinces the family to be in his new ad.
Mitchell and Cameron assess their family members in trying to decide who would best take care of Lily should anything happen to them.
Claire and Gloria's Mother's Day excursion outdoors with the kids turns into the mother of all disasters. Meanwhile, Phil and Jay share an awkward moment when they stay home to prepare dinner for everyone, and Cameron worries about gender roles in his relationship with Mitchell.
Jay advises a dog trainer, while Phil and Claire switch parenting duties to the kids' chagrin. Mitchell has an extra Lady Gaga ticket when Cameron ends up sick.
The whole family is gathering at Jay's before heading out to Alex's graduation ceremony from middle school, but while at the house, Jay is preoccupied hiding a botox mishap from everyone, Cameron is upset about Mitchell's habit of laughing at his expense, and Phil tries to sympathize with, yet also criticizes Claire on her impending breakdown over the kids growing up too fast. All of this, plus a faulty gate, could mean their missing Alex's big moment.
Jay wants to go fishing on his birthday, but the family insists he have a big party, leading Claire and Mitchell to get trapped in their childhood yard, Phil to encounter his college nemesis at the mall and Cameron to have trouble at the bakery.

As ABC's Emmy® Award-winning series "Modern Family" returns for its second season, Claire finally gets Phil to agree to sell their old station wagon, but not before everyone has to take it on one last ride down memory lane. Meanwhile, when a haphazard hammer-wielding Mitchell decides to build a life-size princess castle for Lily, Cameron calls Jay in for reinforcement, and Manny invites a cute girl over for a study date -- which makes Gloria a little uncomfortable.
In honor of her late grandmother, Gloria decides to cook more traditional Colombian meals, which is met with some ribbing from Jay -- but see who gets the last laugh. Meanwhile Claire finds herself becoming the overbearing mom when she finds out Alex likes a boy, and Haley's idea of sisterly advice is not helping matters; and Mitchell and Cameron have a tiff over Mitchell's freakish aversion to PDA.
An earthquake hits, leaving Claire stuck in the bathroom with the plumber, Manny experiencing an existential crisis while out with Jay, and Mitchell and Cameron digging themselves deeper into a lie when they use the quake to get out of a themed brunch party thrown by their friend, Pepper.
Claire and Mitchell enlist each other's help in trying to spare their significant others from embarrassment - Cameron from his unfortunate wardrobe choices, and Phil from his joke-ridden speech for the realtors' banquet. Meanwhile Jay tries to prove a point to Gloria by attending a quincea–era thrown by one of his employees, and Haley gives Alex sisterly advice on how to be cool.
Noticing that everyone is too busy on their electronic devices to actually interact with one another, Claire and Phil declare a family challenge to see who can stay unplugged the longest. Meanwhile, it's a race against the clock as Mitchell and Cameron frantically try to get Lily into the best pre-schools, and Jay and Manny are concerned about how far Gloria will go to alleviate their problem with the neighbor's barking dog.
Claire loves Halloween and is gearing up to spookify the Dunphy house for the trick or treaters. She gives each family member a role to play, but none of it goes quite right... Cameron can't shake a traumatic childhood experience and hates the holiday, Mitchell has had a terrible day at work, and Gloria is acting weird after Jay and Manny teased her about her accent.
Claire and Haley have a bit of quality girl time while they're stuck at home sick, and Phil is preoccupied by the taunts of a chirping smoke detector. Gloria and Manny's surprise visit at Jay's work leads to headaches for Jay, and Cameron gets swept up by all the lights and cameras when he goes behind Mitchell's back and takes Lily for a commercial.
Everyone is gathering at a restaurant to celebrate Manny’s birthday, though Manny himself is experiencing a mini-life crisis about getting older. Meanwhile, on the way to the restaurant, Phil and Claire decide to engage in a not-so-friendly car race there, and Mitch and Cam get sidetracked when they stop at the mall to pick up a gift.
Cameron loves his mom, so Mitchell isn't quite sure how to tell Cam that she makes him a little uncomfortable. Meanwhile, when Haley finally breaks up with Dylan, Phil takes it harder than anyone else, and Jay's little stomach ache gets exacerbated when he and Manny start looking things up on a medical website.
It's Luke & Manny's first school dance and everyone gets in on the "fun" -- Jay and Phil have to take the boys on a mall run which becomes quite stressful; and Claire revels in the school dance committee duties, but gets a little jealous when Gloria shows up to help. Meanwhile, Mitch and Cam are horrified to learn that Lily is biting other kids on the playground.
Claire becomes a determined neighborhood vigilante hoping to catch and stop a menacing car that speeds though their streets. Meanwhile, Phil is busy trying to land an important listing with a difficult client, Jay teaches Manny how to ride a bike -- only to learn Gloria needs lessons too -- and Mitchell and Cameron stumble upon a mysterious neighbor who is quite the charmer.
Claire and Phil want Alex to relax a little about her studies, but then they start questioning their own intellectual drives. Meanwhile, Gloria tries to befriend another nice couple, much to Jay's chagrin, and Mitch and Cam run into and old female flame of Mitchell's, only to make a disturbing discovery.
Plans backfire when the kids go to surprise their parents with breakfast in bed on their anniversary, only to catch Phil and Claire in a compromising position. Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria's Vegas getaway is thwarted by a brutally honest email that was accidentally sent to Claire, and Mitch and Cam desperately try to get an "in" at the hot new neighborhood restaurant whose owner happens to be a mom (played by Rachael Harris) at Lily's preschool.
In an attempt to avoid turning into that old boring couple, Phil and Claire decide to revisit their Clive and Juliana role-playing rendezvous from last Valentine's Day. Meanwhile Jay has planned an elaborate surprise evening for Gloria, but his plans keep getting thwarted, and an admirer comes between Cameron and Mitchell on V-day, but they can't agree whom the admiration is directed towards.
The guest list for Lily's princess-themed birthday party gets a little out of hand when Mitchell decides to invite mom, much to Claire's dismay, and disinvite Fizbo, much to Cameron's dismay. Things get even more strange when Dede (guest star Shelley Long) shows up with Claire's old high school boyfriend (guest star Matt Dillon) in tow, and Jay and Gloria each turn to their own unique methods of dealing with this gathering of misfits.
Phil and Claire had a huge fight and Phil hasn't a clue as to what it was over, so Gloria steps in to counsel Phil and Jay takes Claire. Meanwhile, Jay may have some regret in buying Gloria a karaoke machine, and Cameron is in full prep mode for a huge fundraising event and enlists help from Mitchell and Luke -- which might not be the best choices.
While Claire runs herself ragged trying to play peacemaker with Haley and Alex, Phil sneaks off for a nice relaxing day at the spa. Meanwhile, Gloria is horrified by Jay's morbid plans to purchase two primo side-by-side crypts in preparation of the inevitable future, and Cameron decides he wants to write a book that celebrates the fact that Lily is adopted -- however, during the process he unearths artifacts that are quite disturbing.
Phil and Claire have some trepidation when they find out that Luke has befriended their crotchety old neighbor, Mr. Kleezak; Jay's attempt to avoid sitting through a symphony concert with Gloria and Manny lands him in the middle of Mitchell and Cameron's "boys' night out"; and Haley has her own adventures in babysitting with Lily.
Cameron is relishing his role as interim music director at Luke and Manny's school, and he's taking on the upcoming spring musical performance with a little too much zest and fervor. Meanwhile, Jay's brother, Tommy (guest star Jonathan Banks), is in town for a visit, and their relentless brotherly ribbing goes a little too far; and Phil convinces the family to be in his new realty ad, but when he goes as far as to wrap the family minivan in the ad, the results are unexpected.
Mitchell and Cameron are looking to assign legal guardians for Lily in case anything were to happen to them, and are secretly assessing their family members. But no one is blowing their socks off, as they witness Jay giving Manny a dose of tough love, Claire secretly taking Luke to a child psychologist to assess his development, and Haley and Alex getting into some delinquent activities at school.
Claire and Gloria want to spend a nice Mother's Day outdoors hiking with the kids, but their nonstop bickering and complaining drives Claire to the edge, and she brings Gloria down with her. Meanwhile, Phil and Jay stay home to cook everyone a nice dinner, but things get really awkward when Phil witnesses an unexpected moment of weakness from Jay, and Cameron gets very self-conscious about being seen as the "mother" in the relationship.
Phil and Claire swap parenting roles for the day - Claire will be the fun loving good cop and Phil the disciplinarian bad cop - and it's literally a shock to each kid's system. Meanwhile Gloria is at it again, taking in every sob story and stray she comes across, Jay finds himself dispensing business advice to an overzealous entrepreneur (guest star Lin-Manuel Miranda) about his dog training business scheme, and Cameron is bedridden with the flu -- leaving Mitchell torn about the Lady Gaga concert tickets they have for later that night.
The whole family is gathering at Jay's before heading out to Alex's graduation ceremony from middle school, but while at the house, Jay is preoccupied hiding a botox mishap from everyone, Cameron is upset about Mitchell's habit of laughing at his expense, and Phil tries to sympathize with, yet also antagonize Claire on her impending breakdown over the kids growing up too fast. All of this, plus a faulty gate, could mean their missing Alex's big moment.
Jay wants nothing more than to have a quiet birthday out fishing on the lake, but the family take that as him wanting a big celebration, and in their frantic scramble to put everything together, Claire and Mitchell wind up trapped in the yard of their childhood home; Phil runs into his old college nemesis while at the mall with Gloria and Lily; Cameron gets himself into some hot water at the bakery, and the kids frantically do some creative editing on grandpa's birthday video, all of which leaves Jay with a headache.

- Hilarious 5 star

I love modern family and I watch it every week on wednesdays. Cam is so funny! The show is unbeatable!

- A bland, unfunny, stupid, arrested development wannabe1 star

I've recently seen a few episodes of this show and I must saw it is HORRIBLE! The characters are unthoughtful archetypes (IE the dumb dad, the smart child, the rebellious child, the dumb child, the precocious child, the insecure mother, the eccentric old man, and of course the gay dudes). It attempts to be a layman's arrested development filmed in the pseudo-documentary style reminiscent of the office. Now while this sounds like a fairly good idea I would just recommend watching those other two shows which are more clever and frankly funny than this pile of full house style trash. It's sad that we live in a society where shows like this and two and a half men live on for long seasons while masterpieces like arrested development go unnoticed and eventually canceled.

- Great show5 star

It combines heart with laughs, and that is both unusual in a comedy, and very welcomed by fans and critics. Another thing is, these stories are realistic, quite a few happened to me, I can relate to so many things in this show, that's why I love it.

- Easily the Greatest Comedy Since Friends5 star

Not since Friends has a strictly-ensemble show been as fresh, smart and well-written as Modern Family. The show is full of likable, relatable characters that always stay true to their given personalities and nature. Season 2 may not have matched it's top-notch first season, but when a show's first season is good enough to win three Emmy's, it's very tough to pull off a following season that matches it's preceder's greatness. Overall, the show consistency and ability to stay true to itself has given it a place in television history.

- greatness and winning5 star

my favorite tv show on the tv right now besides a show called psych which is about a cocky guy who notices a lot of stuff and pretends to be a phychic and has a sidekick named guster who has all the smarts and is very serious so its awesome this show also has action and makes me laugh soooo hard. i highly recomend you buy this show which is awesome but check out the show psych because i said so!!!

- MUST WATCH5 star

This is my favorite tv show of all time it is a must have must watch I have seen every single episode at least three times! It never gets old. The characters are hilarious and I laugh every two seconds. It started out with an amazing pilot and they just keep getting better. The only bad thing about it is that it is too funny I pretty much peed myself once. You have to watch it, one episode and you are hooked.

CanadianGal22 - Absolutely Amazing!5 star

I find that comedy nowadays is filled with ridiculous lines and stupid acts but Modern Family is actually hilarious! Great acting and well written episodes don't go overboard with the silliness but it actually flows and we can all relate to what is going on. None of the characters come off as overbearing or ridiculous for they all play an important role. I would recommend this show to anyone and it is now my number 1 favourite show! Enjoy!

Before I even watched the first episode I had this show written off as bieng stupid, like most other comedies out there claiming to be funny. After much prodding by my wife and friends to give it a try, I watched the complete first season. I was wrong. This is the best comedy on TV. Fresh, new and awesome. I now have a new favorite show. Thank you very much.

Izzy4288 - Lovely5 star

I live this show. I think that it's the best new show on television. The entire cast is amazingly funny. For those who have complained about the gay couple on the show, the title is Modern Family. In today's modern world families come in all forms. To use this review system to complain about homosexuality is ridiculous. The show is great, the cast has been chosen wisely and the problems the three families face are completely relatable and hilarious.

Lost in the '60s - A bright star in a cloudy sky5 star

This show is terrific and brings back the strength of an ensemble with well-written stories. Three or more story lines in every episode with laughter and honest emotions. The relationships can be realistically portrayed where the viewer might want to throttle someone, but the humanity surfaces and we realize that love isn't perfect. Love holds relationships and families together.

kjjcc - addicted5 star

I am addicted to this show...I just discovered it and bought both seasons off itunes, watching all the episodes in a matter of days...so upset that for season 3, i'm going to have to wait between each episode. I guess that's what we get for being so accustomed to instant gratification!

SidneyAP - Love!5 star

One of my all-time favorite shows...I buy it every week!

ChrisPaps - Good Show4 star

Modern Family has just the right number of good characters to save it from the same old mockumentary style that has been shoved down our throats since The Office became popular. Also because this show is on abc, most of the jokes are wholesome, family-friendly and hit the spot. My personal favorites are Always Sunny, Arrested Development, The League, and Childrens Hospital, so my view on comedy tends to be a bit more crude and synical. However for a person like me to have that taste in comedy and yet still be able to appreciate the acting and writing of the show, should speak highly to how well it is put together.

No snoozers allowed - Modern Family rocks5 star

This show is incredibly entertaining. The writing is inspiring and the talent of the writers seems to get better with time. Granted, maybe 1 or 2 episodes weren't up to par but I can overlook them because of how good the rest are. The Middle is running a close second so Modern Family better not let up.There is one problem. but my remote fixes that problem. I watch The Middle than turn it to another channel , then 30 minutes later I turn it back for Modern Family.
