Modern Family, Season 3

Modern Family, Season 3 Summary

A recipient of the 2010 Emmy® Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, Modern Family returns to ABC for its third season! Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) sits at the head of a large and unconventional family. Now in his second marriage to his gorgeous young wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara), Jay has been given something of a second chance. Still, old habits are hard to break, and it’s trial by fire as he tries to adapt to life with the same passion and vigor that Gloria exhibits, which are matched by her precocious 12-year-old son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). There are some culture clashes, a few misunderstandings, but also plenty of sweet victories along the way. Jay’s grown daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), and her husband, Phil (Ty Burrell), are the proud parents of three kids with whom they want that open, healthy, honest relationship. It’s not always easy, especially when you have Haley (Sarah Hyland), a teenage daughter who’s growing up a little fast, Alex (Ariel Winter), a too-smart-for-her-own-good middle daughter and Luke (Nolan Gould), a scatterbrained boy. Add to this that Phil is just a big kid himself, even if he does always have the best intentions. Claire is the anchor, trying her best to run a tight ship and determined not to let her kids have the rebellious childhood she had. Claire’s brother and Jay’s grown son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), is busy raising an adopted daughter, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), with his long term partner, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet). Opposites attract in this household, with Cameron having a wonderfully big personality and maybe a flare for the dramatic, while Mitchell is more buttoned-down. They balance each other out, and these doting fathers are relishing their roles as parents developing their own little family. These three unique families give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family. Modern Family, Season 3 Wiki

Modern Family, Season 3 Synopsis

While vacationing on Lost Creek Ranch, the three families try their hands at a little cattle herding, skeet shooting and horseback riding. There are also some big firsts, a huge surprise and an actual face-off between Jay and a cowboy named Hank.
Mitchell and Cameron plan an evening with the whole family to break the happy news that they're attempting to adopt another child. However, things go wrong when they realize Lily may not take well to another baby in the house. Meanwhile, Claire and Jay are each focused with proving a point.
Jay's relationship with the dog irritates Gloria. Phil and Luke try to master the tightrope. Cameron starts a juice fast.
Jay helps Manny with a school fundraiser. Claire petitions for a stop sign at a busy intersection. Phil and Luke try to create a viral video. Gloria searches for Stella.
Gloria tries to help Jay and Manny with their problems but both are unreceptive. Claire considers running against Councilman Duane Bailey. Cam and Mitch are the victims of a hit-and-run accident.
Phil takes Haley to visit his alma mater. Claire goes out with Mitchell and Cameron. Gloria and Jay may have to broach a delicate subject with Manny.
Gloria persuades Jay to commit to a night of salsa dancing after seeing how much his friend Shorty and his girlfriend do together. Meanwhile, Cameron makes a bet that he can get a woman's phone number at the bar, and Phil builds a tree house for Luke.
The Pritchetts rally for a good cause after a neighbor's house burns down, but there's a downside to their Samaritan intentions when Jay throws out his back, Cameron takes on a moving truck, and some donated toys fall into the wrong hands.
When an old neighborhood kid returns to town as a hugely successful internet billionaire, it gets Phil thinking of what could have been. Jay feels Manny could use a little dose of constructive criticism, and Cameron is offended when Mitchell questions the authenticity of his colorful childhood stories.
The Pritchett clan decide to celebrate Christmas a little early (and in a hurry) so they split up to gather the holiday trappings as Mitchell, Alex and Lily hunt for a tree, Gloria and Luke fetch the ornaments, and Claire and Haley shop for the gifts. Meanwhile, Phil and Manny buy the groceries and Jay and Cameron stand by to wrap presents.
Phil contemplates the worst, after missing a call from the doctor. Elsewhere, Javier, Manny's biological father, pays another visit to take his son to the horse races, Mitchell wins an environmental law award, creating a competition between Cam and himself on who has the better trophy, and Gloria tutors Haley in Spanish.
Jay and Claire take control of their kids' school projects from Manny and Luke, while Haley and Gloria help Phil with a real estate presentation. Elsewhere, Cam and Mitchell meet with a potential birth mother.
Claire prepares for her debate with Duane Bailey. Mitch and Cam try to clean up Lily's language before her turn as a flower girl. Jay blames Stella's strange behavior on Gloria.
Phil's preoccupation with a business opportunity blinds him to his new partner's inappropriate behavior around Claire. Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria may regret letting Mitchell and Cameron be their temporary house guests when their home is being fumigated.
Phil and Claire go overboard with drinks, and divulging personal information, on a night out to celebrate the sale of a house to Mitchell and Cameron's friends.
It's a day of disturbing realizations when Mitchell manages to ruin one of Jay's proudest golf moments, Phil overhears something that may forever change how he sees his little girl, and Gloria stumbles upon Claire's dangerous little secret.
Mitchell feels pressured to make Cameron's birthday extra special. People start to question Jay's manliness, and the girls interfere with Phil's leap day plans.
The funeral service for a beloved clown mentor reunites Cameron with his estranged ex-clown partner, Lewis. Phil is serious about landing a very important listing, only to get trumped by a notorious bulldozer of an agent, Mitzi Roth. Manny has a cool new friend, which makes both Jay and Gloria suspicious.
Claire's race for town council comes to a head on Election Day as the Dunphys make phone calls for votes and Mitchell and Cameron take to the streets to campaign, while the candidate endures technical problems during some last-minute interviews.
A visit from Cameron's father features an awkward dinner for Jay and Gloria at Mitchell and Cameron's house. Meanwhile, Claire helps Luke face the death of an older neighbor, Phil and Alex have a father-daughter bonding experience, and Haley throws a party without permission.
Phil buys a car without consulting Claire. Jay is on a mission to get to his high-school reunion with Gloria and Manny. Lily loses her favorite toy on a train.
When the family travels to Disneyland, Phil struggles to keep up with Luke, Claire is shocked when they run into Dylan, Jay and Gloria disagree about what are sensible shoes for the day, and Mitch and Cam must contain Lily's new affinity for running.
Gloria and Jay bicker while trying to order lunch at a diner. Claire and Cam have different theories on how to discipline kids. Luke accepts an award under false pretenses. Phil has a hard time firing Mitchell from his temporary job at the real estate agency. The entire family participates in Alex's living art display of Norman Rockwell's Thanksgiving painting.
Gloria's bilingualism comes in handy on Mitchell and Cameron's quest to adopt another child. Meanwhile, Jay and Manny help Lily get ready for a dance recital. Alex goes to her first prom, and Haley announces her future plans, which come as a shock to her family.

Our favorite family decide to don their cowboy boots and hats and head to Jackson Hole, Wyoming for some fun and adventure in the great outdoors. While vacationing on Lost Creek Ranch, they try their hands at a little cattle herding, skeet shooting and horseback riding; there are also some big firsts, a huge surprise and an actual face off between Jay and a foe - a cowboy named Hank!
Mitch and Cam plan a nice evening with the whole family to break the happy news that they're looking to adopt another child. However their parade is rained on when they realize Lily may not take well to another baby in the house. Meanwhile, Claire and Jay are each consumed with proving a certain point.
The growing bond between man, Jay, and dog, Stella, is grating on Gloria's nerves; Phil and Luke embark on a new adventure involving a tightrope, but it's Claire with the missteps, as she tries to teach the girls a life lesson; and Cameron chooses the most inopportune time to start a juice fast.
Everyone sets their eyes on a goal: Jay is determined to help Manny sell wrapping paper for a school fundraiser; Claire petitions the city for a stop sign to be installed at a high-traffic intersection; Mitchell is hell bent on proving a point with Cameron, and neither one of them will back down; Phil and Luke will stop at nothing to create a viral video sensation; and Gloria is desperate to find Stella after losing him. Guest starring David Cross.
Jay is frustrated at work, Manny is stressed out about school work, Gloria would like to help but no one seems to want it. Phil and Claire run into Councilman Duane Bailey (guest star David Cross) again, who is out campaigning for his second run, and he's just as irritating as they remembered -- so much so that Claire may give him a run for his money. Mitch and Cam get into a fender bender and the other car flees, which becomes the tipping point for all the men in the family who decides to take out their frustrations on the kid giving Haley problems.
It's father-daughter time, as Phil takes Haley on a college tour of his old alma mater, and Claire, having a rare night alone, forces Mitchell and Cameron to take her for a fun night out with the boys -- but ends up alone with one particular man candy who is anything but gay. Meanwhile, Gloria and Jay deal with a potential situation at home that may require having "the talk" with Manny. Guest starring Gilles Marini.
Hanging out with Shorty (guest star Chazz Palminteri) and his girlfriend, Darlene (guest star Jennifer Tilly), makes Gloria envious of how much those two do as a couple, so she gives Jay an ultimatum to step it up for a night of salsa dancing or else. Meanwhile, Cameron takes a bet a little too far when Mitchell and Crispin challenge him to get a hot girl's (guest star Leslie Mann) number at the bar, and Phil builds a tree house for Luke, but ends up being the one to make a new friend (guest star Kevin Hart).
After a neighbor's home burns down, the whole family rallies and organizes a community drive to help do some good - though it's not all good, as Jay throws out his back, Cameron does some posturing with a huge moving truck, Claire discovers that Mitchell and Gloria have been spending a lot of time together, and Luke and Manny get their hands on some of the donated toys.
When an old neighborhood kid returns to town as a hugely successful internet billionaire, it gets Phil thinking of what could have been. Jay feels Manny could use a little dose of constructive criticism, and Cameron is offended when Mitchell questions the authenticity of his colorful childhood stories. It all comes to a head at Thanksgiving with the family divided between the "Dreamers" and the "Pritchetts" -- and nothing settles the score like a punkin chunkin challenge.
The family is gathered at Jay and Gloria's pool on a sunny December day, and that's where they realize that everyone will be scattered this coming Christmas, so if they want to celebrate together, then it will have to be today! Everyone sets off with their respective duties for Express Christmas - Mitchell, Alex and Lily get the tree, Jay and Cameron are in charge of gift wrapping, Phil and Manny get the groceries, Gloria and Luke go retrieve the ornaments, and Claire and Haley shop for all the gifts. When they all return in the evening, it's quite a sight.
After having a doctor's visit but then missing the call with the test results, Phil automatically jumps to conclusions and starts saying his goodbyes. Meanwhile Javier pops up unannounced again and takes Manny to the horse races for a belated birthday celebration, and a subtle competition ensues when Mitchell brings home an environmental law award and it becomes a game of who has the bigger trophy.
Luke and Manny have a big school project to design the best capsule that would protect an egg in a two-story drop, but when Claire and Jay catch wind of it, their own competitive drives kick in... and eventually take over. Meanwhile, Phil solicits the help of Haley and Gloria to sit as plants in the audience during a huge real estate presentation he has put together, and Mitch and Cam meet with prospective birth mothers and must try their very best to be charming and likeable.
The family helps Claire prepare for her upcoming televised debate with Duane Bailey for the town council seat, but will they do more harm than good? Lily is going to be a precious flower girl for the first time, but the problem is she's just discovered her first expletive and Mitch and Cam don't know how best to deal with this new parenting test. And Jay is very concerned with Stella's recent strange behavior and puts the blame on Gloria.
Phil is so preoccupied with impressing his new business partner, Tad (Greg Kinnear), that he doesn't notice what Claire believes is Tad being overtly inappropriate with her. Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria let Mitchell and Cameron stay over while their house is fumigated, and it turns out four is a crowd.
After closing on the sale of a house to Mitch and Cam's friends, Phil and Claire take the two of them out for a celebratory dinner where they proceed to over-indulge in drinks, which leads to some over-sharing, and finally results in waking up the next morning hung over and begging the question - if you'll do anything for family, shouldn't there still be a line drawn somewhere?
It's a day of disturbing realizations when Mitchell manages to ruin one of Jay's proudest golf moments, Phil overhears something that may forever change how he sees his little girl, and Gloria stumbles upon Claire's dangerous little secret.
Cameron's birthday falls on Leap Day, and with opportunities to celebrate so few and far between, the pressure for Mitchell to get it right is exceptional. Meanwhile, Jay's machismo is in question, and Phil's plans to observe the Leap Day holiday with the boys is thwarted by the girls.
The funeral service for a beloved clown mentor reunites Cameron with his estranged ex-clown partner, Lewis (guest star Bobby Cannavale); Phil is serious about landing a very important listing, only to get trumped by a notorious bulldozer of an agent, Verna Roth (guest star Ellen Barkin); and Manny has a cool new friend, which makes both Jay and Gloria suspicious.
The all important election day has arrived and the whole family rallies for some last minute campaigning - Mitch and Cam ride around in a 'Vote for Claire' mobile, the Dunphy house is campaign central with everyone manning phones and soliciting votes, and Claire does some last minute interviews -- with a few technical difficulties.
Claire delicately helps Luke cope with the fact that his friend and their old neighbor, Walt, has passed. Phil takes Alex for some father-daughter bonding time, and Haley throws an unauthorized party. Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria go over to Mitch and Cam's to have dinner with Cam's father, Merle, who is in town visiting -- and awkwardness and tension seem to be the rule of the night.
The Dunphys are in the market for a new car and Phil makes a spontaneous purchase without Claire. Will he have buyer's remorse? Meanwhile, Jay is determined to get to his high school reunion with Gloria and Manny in tow, and Lily loses her favorite stuffed animal on a public metro train, leaving Mitch and Cam with an inconsolable toddler.
Nothing is more quintessential to good ol' family fun than a trip to Disneyland -- but not without a side of motion sickness, achy feet and a wayward toddler -- when the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan hits the park! Phil tries to keep up with Luke, Claire's shocked when they run into Dylan, Jay and Gloria disagree about what are sensible shoes for the day, and Mitch and Cam must contain Lily's new affinity for running.
It seems everyone has a bone to pick: Jay and Gloria get on each other's nerves while trying to simply order lunch at their local diner; Phil is put in the position of having to fire Mitchell; Cam and Claire have opposing theories on how to discipline children; and Manny is upset with Luke for accepting an award under false pretenses - all of which spells trouble for Alex who is counting on them to all work together for a "living art" school project display.
It's been an up-and-down emotional roller coaster for Mitch and Cam in their quest to adopt another child. Their latest ride has them bringing Gloria in tow as a translator, leaving Jay and Manny to look after Lily, who has a big dance recital coming up. Meanwhile Claire and Phil have a proud parenting moment when they send Alex off to her first prom, but then that is quickly marred with Haley's shocking news of her future plans.

This is one of my favorite TV shows ever. It's funny, heartwarming, and smart. Every season includes hilarious surprises, but season 3 is by far the funniest of them all. - Best Season!5 star

I loved seasons one and two but three is defiantly the best!!! I am a little disappointed with four though...

- I don't understand the complaining!5 star

If anything this is their best season. With episodes like When Good Kids Go Bad and Door to Door, you see writing at it's very best. The characters are maturing and comedy is as good as ever. I read someone say that the new lilly was "forced." It's not forced. It had to be done. She's not gonna stay a baby for 3 years. If you ask me, the season gets an A+. By the way, the episode "Little Bo Bleep" has got to be one of the funniest episodes ever. Possibly my favorite.

- Transition to New Seat , or Accidental Defeat??4 star

I absolutely LOVE Modern Family! Always makes my night, and with not having a TV I watch the episodes on repeat on my laptop. I do have to say though some inconsistencies compared with the first two seasons do stand out and I miss that element. It seems to be making a gradual transition from a little less fake reality tv to more of an actual TV show. There have been less "interviews" with the family members which honestly contributed heavily to the feel of the show that I love so much. Just seems a little off this season. Still, many of the episodes are epic! I just hope next season the writers get back and maintain the clever humor that made the show so enticing. Keep it up! But seriously...keep it up....

- Best Of The Best5 star

This is the best show ever!!!!!!!!!

- Awesome!!!5 star

Great show ,great characters and story!!!!!!!!!

- Modern Awesome5 star

I love it!!! I watch it all the time!!

- Still a good show4 star

I will always remain a devoted Modern Family fan, but I have to be honest and say that this season has been inconsistent at best and sitcommy at worst. While it's far from the freshness and brilliance of the first two seasons (especially the flawless first season), it's still one of the better comedies on TV. Overall, Modern Family is still a good show worth watching every week.

- Grae but...4 star

its been like three weeks since a new eposide came out. what gives!

- Pretty good5 star

Almost as good as all the other seasons 1&2 were the best though I love Phil on a wire & go bullfrogs

- Meh...3 star

When this season first came out, I assumed it would be another awesome season like the first 2. When I saw the first episode, I thought, "Well, it's a little weak, but I'm sure they'll get better." Well, it's 18 episodes in, and they still haven't. There are some really good episodes (Phil on a Wire, Go, Bullfrogs!, Treehouse, After the Fire, Aunt Mommy, Leap Day, Send Out the Clowns) but the unusually bad episodes outweigh them. So, I'm going to say that this hasn't been as good a season as usual, and I'm hoping that they'll get better as the series goes along. P.S. Little Bo Bleep is the worst episode ever. They got 3 new writers this season, and none of them are any good. Cindy Chupack is the worst of them. Get it together!

- Not as good as seasons 1 & 24 star

The first two seasons were hilarious but this one is just ok

- Good5 star

Great show. I also did the egg drop in school.

- I could watch all day every day5 star

this show is so amazing in so many ways! The characters are all so funny and witty and lovable in their own way, and you can help but laugh and root for them like your own family. I HOPE MODERN FAMILY never ends!!

Great show. One of the best comedies out there right now. But I'm not going to pay $62 for a digital download. That is ludicrous. It should be $50 for HD and $40 for SD at the most. There are no physical packages, no shipping, none of that crap. So why is it so expensive?

Bob 4156789 - Answer5 star

To answer everyone's question about why the Australian iTunes store is so far behind, it's because iTunes can only upload an episode if it has been broadcasted on the network that has purchased the rights to air modern family in Australia. The broadcaster is channel ten and you can complain to them why they are so slow broadcasting the episodes.

Modern Family is one of the best tv shows yet. It is hilarious from start to finish, but most importantly it shows no matter how different or whether or not you get along with your family, at the end of the day you still luv them just as they are :)

Jaimie Cusack - way to expensive compared to america5 star

american tv shows + music are so cheap and you know that you spent that $20 or $30 dollar gift voucher wisely!!! and our tv shows in australia are so behind!!!! we need updates and cheaper buys.

SupaCop - Why Is Australia so far behind US episodes on iTunes?5 star

Great show but typical of the Aussie iTunes site to be so far behind the US iTunes. 7 episodes to be exact and they have the same SD versions for $1.99; and they are available for download the morning after being shown on US networks. Given the high AU$ we should be paying $1.85 per episode. Wake up you lame brains purchasing from the AU iTunes website and bombard iTunes with emails demanding the Australian pricing be brought in line with US pricing. Like I said the 7 episodes after this one are some of the funniest MF ever written, just a pity we are being made to wait until Ch 10 have shown them before iTunes AU will release them.

brucel - Why so slow with new episodes!4 star

When are we going to get new episodes! The US iTunes store has many many more episodes available (AND in HD for the same price!) Why is the Au iTunes store so far behind and not offering HD content - this simply encourages piracy.

DJ SOUTHSIDE - Best comedy on television5 star

The best thing about this show is that the characters are very relatable. Hope the series continues on strong.

Rosco1053 - great show!5 star

this show is great and it is well worth the money, it has humor, and no laugh track int he background, i think they should release the episodes the night they get aired on tv... apart from that it is an amazing show ! 5 stars!

Jennifer Odgers - Great Show!5 star

This is the best show I have watched in a long time, I have watched every single episode at least 5 times, no joke. Strongly recommend it.

Lalalulu1 - Amazing show5 star

I have to say that Modern Family is the funniest, most original show that has many talented actors in its line up!! The script is sensational as is the comic timing of all the characters!! A must for the whole family if you like comedy, family and something different!! I wish my family was like this show!! Enjoy

PatnByron - Modern Genius!5 star

What a phenomenal show! It raises the bar for network comedic genius. My husband and I can't stop laughing! I find myself "prescribing" it to those "evolved" friends of mine who live "off the grid" and have sworn off tv! And they all thank me for it!

JJhovanHerr - What happened?2 star

Shooshie - Best Family Comedy EVER!5 star

[editing review much later: This week's episode of Modern Family was called Treehouse, and has been available on all other sites, including pirate sites, for a whole day. There is not a trace of it in iTunes Music Store. I paid $50 for the season, and yet I'm the LAST to be able to watch it? This is a problem, Apple. /edit] This show actually makes you laugh out loud, and it's the kind of laughter that's fun to share with friends. It's not "laugh-track" laughter. This is some of the best comedic writing I've seen in my life, and I'm including all comedy, all formats, in that comparison. But Modern Family has a deeper side to it which examines real issues experienced by real people and families of our time. The last show I remember that hit this hard was All in the Family, but that was really about Archie Bunker; a different kind of show. Modern Family manages to give equal billing to all six of the `spouses in the three families, as well as a lot of time for the 5 children. I also like that it's set in real neighborhoods on real streets (Hint: Dunleer, Fox Hills, and Cliffwood) in Los Angeles, not just a fictional studio set. The whole thing makes you feel like these might be your neighbors that you just happen to visit each week. What makes the show outstanding? Really, everything. They took care to get it all right, including each member of the cast. No, they aren't all equal in abilities as actors. Some are relatively weak; others can't help but stand out. But rather than let the show become about those better actors, the writers have kept the emphasis on the family as an ensemble, and that makes it feel much stronger as a show, funnier as comedy, more poignant as social commentary. In every episode there are lines that stand out, lines from which you can learn or at least say "yeah, that's right." One of my favorites is from the first season. After an entire episode of trying to define what makes a good father, Jay finally says at the end: "90% of being a father is just showing up." That's the kind of homespun, pithy aphorism that makes this show great.

Smiling but not Laughing - Amusing at best3 star

The now-overused format was funny when The Office did it FIRST, but now it's trite. Modern Family is amusing but not gut-busting funny as described by some people. Maybe it's just me...

skaterryan - Could Modern Family be getting even worse3 star

Season 1 was awesome then season 2 was ok and now season 3 is off to a bad start. Lets just hope that this season gets better. The first 2 episodes did absolutley nothing for me

skilleahy - Love the Show, but I miss Lily!5 star

Modern Family is of course deserving of all of its awards. It is the rare laugh out loud comedy on television--that even offers a positive social message deeply hidden among all of the laughs. I just miss the actresses who played Lily before. I realize that bringing in older "more professional" (?) performers allows more creative leeway in writing scripts. However, one of the joys of the show was watching the adults act like two year olds and Lily being the most adult in every scene. I know that this was needed, but I just needed a place to vent and wish those two young girls the best that of everything that life has to offer. My wife and I miss you. Thank you to everyone else for putting up with my need to vent.

BellaCullen15 - Best season5 star
