Like a shot of Johnny Walker redEach year the Doctor Who production team of the rebooted series creates a special for fans during the "off season." It has become a traditional Xmas gift for fans of the 45+ year TV series. For the past several years the storyline, visual effects and overall production have been getting better and better. The Xmas series has been one of the highlights of the year. This year however the Xmas special is a good episode, but not an enabler. Fifty eight minutes in length, this heart warming family oriented story that borrows from the Wardrobe from Chronicles of Narnia with a hint of Lord of the Rings will keep regular viewers content. However, unlike previous Xmas episode it is not a strong enough episode to entertain those who are not familiar with the good doctor on xmas day. It doesn't reach the heights of last year's Xmas carol or 2009's Voyage of the Damned or 2008s… Previous Xmas specials were a free shot of heroin, opening a door to a whole new universe...someone who has never seen the show before could watch one hour of Dr Who, enjoy, crave more and begin their journey. This episode is more like a shot of Johnny Walker…great for those who have already acquired a taste, but somewhat abrupt for those who never partied..Score: 4/5

A Mother's StrengthThis Doctor Who episode definitely shined brightly for the holidays. The plot took turns that were not unexpected but highly provocative of thought. If I were to give this a rating it would be higher than the five star iTunes allows not only for the acting and story, but the fact and myth behind it. The idea of a living forest and whispering trees takes you back to many story tales like The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, as it is supposed to but also the the times of your childhood when things were unexplained. A great story, but concern for any future Christmas specials...This episode felt rushed at some parts, but I get that it was more the idea that was being expressed rather than the "Hollywood"-moments that North American TV shows have. This was a great standalone episode and a smart tie-in to the Amy/Rory arc. My only concern for future Christmas specials: next Christmas, would it be possible to create a unique Christmas special that doesn't 'borrow' from other holiday classics? (i.e. A Christmas Carol). It's got heartI can't think of a series that produces Christmas specials that have heart. Dr Who does just that. The camera work in this is excellent. It has some beautiful visuals and lovely human characters, characters I always find myself caring about. There are moments in Dr Who that always make me think "wouldn't it be grand?" The more I think about this episode the more I think that Moffat has managed to reinvent the Myth of Christmas and bring it together fuse it with Santa Claus.
