WHO on earth picked theseColin Baker was my Dr and therefore my fave, despite some shoddy stories and a stupid costume. My question here is, who picked these eps, whoever it was should be shot. Attack of the cybermen, great, Revelation, great, trial, errrr much better than twin dilemma. The selection to reflect the 6th is poor and not worth the unnecessary wait..Score: 3/5
Unrepresentative collectionI often feel rather sorry for Colin Baker. An actor with charisma and presence to burn, he was a natural choice to play the Doctor, yet he was let down by some of the worst writing in the history of the show. He deserved much better. The show's creative output reached it's nadir with the first story in this collection, the execrable 'Twin Dilemma'. This story regularly "wins" fan polls for the dubious honour of worst story in the 50+ year history of the show, and with good reason. The plot is limp as a noodle, the production values are hilariously bad, the monster is basically just a giant slug that just shuffles about the place being all stroppy and zapping people with his antennae, and (with the notable exceptions of the two leads, Baker and Bryant) it contains some of the worst acting ever seen on British TV. Worse, every effort is made to make the Doctor as repugnant and unlikeable as possible, even going so far as to have him try to strangle his assistant in a fit of madness (an act which he never bothers to even apologise for), and this was his debut story! Russell T. Davies has referred to this story as "The beginning of the end for the classic series" and it's hard to deny that the man has a point. I'm sure that there are people out there who like this story, but then again there are probably people out there who like dental injections as well. I suspect the overlap between these two groups is quite considerable. On the other hand, Baker's tenure does feature some real gems. Foremost among them, in my opinion, is 'Vengeance on Varos'. Easily the best story of the Baker era, as well as an outside contender for best story ever, it's a classic chase adventure which also manages some sly satirical digs at the desensitising effects of TV violence. The plot is compelling, the set pieces are exciting, and a thick vein of dark humour runs through the entire story. It also contains, in the presence of the character of Sil, one of the most vivid and most eccentric villains in years. Vengeance on Varos is a true five star classic, and an indispensable addition to the collection of any serious Who fan. Timelash...well, Timelash is somewhere in the middle. Personally, I don't really like it, but I have friends who do. Rather than purchase this entire collection, my advice would be to buy Vengeance on Varos and Timelash separately. This is purely 100% down to the fact that it's the only way to avoid being stuck with Twin Dilemma. I'd then augment that with The Two Doctors (a flawed, but still entertaining story with some terrific rapport between Baker and the great Patrick Troughton in his final appearance) and Revelation of the Daleks. Frankly, the choice of stories in this collection is slightly puzzling. This isn't the best of the Baker era at all. It's one of the best, one of the absolute worst, and one that's somewhere in the middle. As such, I give it three stars. If they'd swapped Twin Dilemma for The Two Doctors, it would easily have been a four, and I doubt you'd find many Who fans who'd disagree..Score: 3/5
