Details start to emerge when the boy, who calls himself Jacob, recalls that his hometown is Arcadia, and an Immigration agent, J. Martin Bellamy, takes him there. The home he claims as his own is occupied by a 60-year-old couple, Henry and Lucille Langston, who lost their son, Jacob, more than 30 years ago. While they look different, young Jacob recognizes them as his parents. Lucille is overjoyed at the seeming miracle of her son's reappearance. Henry is reluctant to accept that Jacob is back. Those closest to the family want answers, including Sheriff Fred Langston, whose wife Barbara drowned 30 years ago while trying to save Jacob, and Fred's daughter, Maggie, a local doctor. Pastor Tom Hale seeks a spiritual reason for what's happening in his community. When things take an even more shocking turn, Maggie's life-long friend, Elaine Richards, finds herself drawn into Arcadia's growing mystery. Bellamy, an outsider in the town, joins forces with Maggie to figure out why the unexplainable is happening in Arcadia. As their investigation plays out, Maggie learns some unsettling truths about her own past. Will they be able to solve the mystery of Arcadia before the rest of the world catches on to events there? And will they be able to protect Jacob from forces beyond their control?

Another interesting premise, weak writingThis is another show with a potentially interesting premise… a mystery about returning people from a town who have died violently. The mystery is intriguing and draws you in. The acting, while not stellar, is passable. In this case, the story arc of the mystery proceeds relatively slowly, and with a bit too much over-hyped drama. Lots of overdone "soulful" moments. As with many of these shows, however, the writing is really poor, and can't be rescued by the interesting premise or even stellar acting. It is trite and formulaic. Characters are flat and not well developed; in some cases they are caricatures that behave in extremely unrealistic ways to advance a plot line that has stalled. Even by the end of the season you don't feel particular connections to any of them. Love triangles pop up and vanish to add artificial tension without meaning. Supposedly capable characters are suddenly lobotomized in order to advance the plot. For those who enjoy intriguing mysteries of the sci-fi flavor, you'll be tempted to get sucked into this, but will be repeatedly let down as the writers botch internal consistency or just jump the shark repeatedly by the end of the season..Score: 2/5
Another great production by ABC!I finally found my new favorite TV Show!! The first episode was phenomenal. What a powerful way to start the first season, I love all the characters, the acting and the story line! Amateur Copycat ShowI saw a preview for 'The Returned' while watching AHS Coven and was totally gripped by the pilot. then I saw a preview for 'Resurrection', undeniably the same as 'The Returned' and it had me ticked off. The acting is pretty half crapped on the part of the little boy, the plot is like it was made up in a week...overall, it's an amateur copycat show and I knew it would be, coming from ABC. Reminds me of the shows “Alcatraz” and “Flashforward."Look, I am fond of the actors I know. Omar Epps is the only one I can remember off of the top of my head. It is not a shocker that this show is based off of a show in France, that is how most a lot of TV around the world acts. But the thing is that there has been some similar shows in the U.S. For example, “Alcatraz,” which had prisons and guards show up decades after disappearing, And I feel ABC’s “Flashforward,” just had a similar feel, except people knew about the future. Quite frankly, having people show up after such a long period of death may be interesting in some cases, but I feel the acting lacks a degree of sincerity from some of the actors, and you know that there is going to be some weird twist that made that town susceptible to events like this. Some will say it is faith, and a miracle, but it will be mysterious and related to scientific testing, maybe aliens. I just get tired or the ABC formula. Re-use actors from other ABC shows, Direct it towards middle-aged women. Add poorly written petty controversy (cheating, secrets, hidden money, fighting, lost loves pining etc). Have the religion vs. science debate (The Minister from this show, was the doctor from V, but they had a priest in V, that had this inner faith battle). And create a completely lousy lame explanation for why everything is happening. (greatest example: Lost). But one could easily carry on. And I know it isn’t only directed towards middle-aged women, but most shows are as that is their demographic. I only gave it two stars because of the actors I like, and because most people will just click, “not helpful” without reason. I just think the show is bad and it should be a bomb. But ABC loves their brand of drama, pettiness, and lousy explanations for their bazaar events..Score: 2/5
