Creating "one of the jauntiest of all war-of-the-sexes comedies" (Pauline Kael), Pedro Almodóvar, Spain's premiere writer-director, creates an off-kilter universe of madness, mayhem and pure fun. High atop one of Spain's poshest penthouses, three women have come to the end of their mental ropes. Super-sexy Pepa (Carmen Maura) is forever teetering around atop her skyscraper spikes as she obsesses over Iván (Fernando Guillén), the lover who just jilted her over the answering machine! Her neurotic best friend Candela (María Barranco) is seeking refuge at Pepa's place because she recently realized her lover is a Shiite terrorist. And Iván's ex-wife Lucía (Julieta Serrano) was just released from a 20-year stint in a mental institution. They're all mighty mad -- in fact, they're on the verge of a nervous breakdown and one of them is about to commit murder unless the other half-crazed femmes fatales can stop her!
Pepa resolves to kill herself with a batch of sleeping-pill-laced gazpacho after her lover leaves her. Fortunately, she is interrupted by a deliciously chaotic series of events.

WRONG LANGUAGE, ITUNESJust purchased this film as I had requested more Almodovar films to be available. Unfortunately someone at iTunes or the supplier of the film screwed up and the move is DUBBED IN ENGLISH. Even the TRAILER is in English. The page for the film says it is in Spanish, and when the film is playing you can even turn on English subtitles, but the original Spanish language dialog is missing. Please exercise quality control iTunes. Mistakes like this are HIGHLY annoying. On the good side, the picture quality is excellent and and it's of course a great film, WHEN IT IS IN SPANISH..Score: 1/5
Fabulous CampGreat film. I've heard of it for years but had yet to view it. Rented it and wish I had bought it. I'll buy it anyway as it is a must have. Oh and one other side note for all those reviewers complaining about the English subtitles and giving this bad reviews, it IS in Spanish...one just has to adjust their iTunes settings either on your device or your Apple TV. You can also choose what language you want the subtitles in, if you want them at all. It simply defaults to the English dubbed version. Changing your settings is easy, if you don't know how then google it..Score: 5/5
The dubbing keeps it from being 5 stars.It isn't that it's dubbed. It's just that the acting is so bad. It's like they were handed a script and read it cold. The character is lost. A shame for such a fine film..Score: 4/5
For those who say there is a language Issue with buying/renting this comedyThe movie is in Spanish…as it was released. Just have to make the adjustment on your Apple TV remote. Hold down play button,options for languages,subtitles,etc will be present on screen along with chapters that you might watch again or skip past. Other than that,my review is just this,a great movie that I enjoyed when it came out in 1988 and now that i own in my iTunes library..Score: 5/5

Dubbed!One of the best movies ever, but NOT best dubbed. Had to add my vocals to the chorus, I rented it but could not watch it. The voices are terrible and a great deal of the humor is lost. Scared to rent any of the other Almodovar movies until the pages say SUBTITLES..Score: 1/5
Unpredictable, Funny, Startling, Amusing - A Typical Almodovar MovieLoved this. As usual, a focus on women as the main characters, made decades ago but still a great movie. A typical Almodovar movie showing extremes -the extreme & crazy actions of the women powerfully communicate the vulnerabilities of humanity, the corruption, the pain, and forgiveness. The typical use of color - of reds, of blues. Somehow, an Almodovar movie is always a "drama," even when it is classified as a "comedy." Good movie. I purchased it. I will watch it again. The movie is in Castillian Spanish (the type spoken in Spain) as well as other languages- you just have to switch it to Spanish on your computer or whatever you are watching it on - but provides no Spanish subtitles. I speak Spanish, so I personally had no problem having no Spanish subtitles..Score: 4/5
It’s great... and you can switch btwn Esp, Eng, FrI’m learning Spanish and am having fun renting lots of Spanish movies. This is a bit whacky with lots of dark comedy. To change the audio language or subtitles, tap the Dialog bubble icon on the bottom right of the screen. The English dub is truly terrible. but it is great the the subtitles..Score: 5/5
