CoolStar Trek.....what can I say about this sci-fi saga (besides it being the best Sci-Fi saga out there). Why? Such great stories plus adding actual science to it really works. When I first heard they were going to remaster the series, I was afraid that it would be as terrible as the effects added to the Star Wars films. But, thankfully they did not make George Lucas's mistake and made the effects reasonable. So, without a further a due, here's a review of each episode: 1) The Man Trap- it's a good start. The Salt Vampire in this one is pretty cool 2) Charlie X- first character to have superbeing powers aired on TV and I like how they did it 3) Where No Man Has Gone Before- an interesting story but I still have to question how a boulder could stop a Superbeing!!!!! 4) The Naked Time- not much of a fan of it 5) The Enemy Within- an interesting spin on the whole Jekyll/Hyde story....why not have Jekyll and Hyde both exist in the same room! 6) Mudd's Women- here we go. The first time we see Harry Mudd. Cool 7) What Are Little Girls Made Of?- Holy Crap! It's Ted Cassidy! That's worth the $1.99 for sure 8) Miri- even though I wasn't a fan of this episode, I do have to admit the effects added to it do help the story 9) Dagger of the Mind- this was parodied by South Park one time 10)The Corbomite Maneuver- I still can't get over the fact that Balok's ship is really that big! And I still can't believe the effects are superior in every way to the original! 11 & 12) The Menagerie, Pt. 1 and Pt.2- Captain Pike! Holy Crap! For once, using footage from another episode works! Though, I wish Apple would upload the Cage. But, this episode is still good. I love the ending of this episode. 13) The Conscience of the King- not much of a fan of it 14) Balance of Terror- the first time we get to see the Romulans, first time Mark Leonard appeared (not as Sarek of Vulcan, but as the Romulan commander) and it's good. By the way, first episode to be aired with the Remastered Effects 15) Shore Leave- you know, going to a planet where everything you could ever desire can't always work out, now can it? 16) The Galileo Seven- good remastering! The first time we get to see a shuttle craft! Also, how come we don't see more of those ape people? They look awesome. 17) The Squire of Gothos- This is the episode when Trelane [Get's interuppted by Trelane when he says, "General Trelane, retired sir. Just Squire Trelane now. Yes, I rather fancy that."] appears and sadly didn't appear again on the show. By the way, I think he was the inspiration for one of my favorite sci-fi characters ever, Q! Good episode Gene! 18) Arena- my favorite episode of the series! Why? The freakin' Gorn, that's why. Good story and great alien that also was voiced by Ted Cassidy! By the way, when you watch the remastered episode, try to spot the ship. You might like it. 19) Tomorrow is Yesterday- Oops! Went back in time again. Sorry. The effects help it out. 20) Court Martial- [smacks head in embarassment] NEXT! 21) The Return of the Archons- not much of a fan 22) Space Seed- HOLY CRAP! IT'S KHAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!! 23) A Taste of Armageddon- nope, not a fan of it 24) This Side of Paradise- pretty good and wait...Spock? Why are you hanging on the tree like a monkey? 25) The Devil in the Dark- a great episode by the way.....love the remastering of it 26) Errand of Mercy- my father's favorite episode (he's a bigger Trekker than me) and by the way, first Klingon episode and a pretty good one at that 27) The Alternative Factor- you know, people say Mirror, Mirror is the first episode to deal with alternate universes.......they are wrong. This one does and the story works 28) The City On The Edge of Forever- William Shatner's favorite episode.....and I don't blame him 29) Operation- Annihilate!- It's pretty good and a good way to end this season Bottomline, this season is great! The classic series that started it all!Overall Iām pleased with how the remasters have turned out, they managed to resist the urge to change too much and have kept things mostly in-keeping with the original, iconic look of the series. However, I do have some criticisms of how Apple are distributing them. Given the price I would have expected access to the original versions of the episodes. The Blu-Ray releases allow you to switch between versions at will, and while I donāt expect seamless switching from iTunes I would at least expect to be allowed to download the original versions. Further, I wish the show was presented in production order rather than original broadcast order. While there is certainly some merit to experiencing the episodes in the order that original viewers saw (with the no-doubt confusing appearance of the second pilot as the third episode) itās much more satisfying to watch the cast, sets, props and effects evolve as production continues. Finally, why is The Cage not included? It was originally released as part of Season 3 but none of the iTunes releases include it, which is a pretty unforgivable omission given that it was one of the best Classic Trek episodes..Score: 3/5
