Quando uno dei suoi compagni di squadra si infortuna, David viene chiamato per sostituirlo, ma lui rifiuta di farlo perché insoddisfatto della posizione di partenza. Durante le gare, però, il suo talento comincia a venire notato e i giornalisti lo segnalano come la promessa dello sci statunitense. Le gare, però, non vanno proprio come David e l'allenatore speravano e la squadra torna in America con un piccolo bottino di premi. L'anno successivo, tornato di nuovo in Europa con la squadra, David vince una gara dopo l'altra, ma il campione austriaco gli dà filo da torcere. Per diventare un grande campione, David dovrà crescere e diventare un uomo.
