Loved the play; the movie, not so muchI saw a community theater performance of the Fantasticks about 10 years ago. I'm not exactly an aficionado of staged musicals, but I was captivated by that show and its music. When I found that a filmed version was available on iTunes, I downloaded it hoping to get that feeling back. The film does not do justice to the work upon which it was based. The play made me appreciate the narrative nature of our lives. The movie is like a butterfly collection. It preserves some aspects of its subjects' beauty, but it is devoid of life..Score: 2/5
Love itA few weeks ago i went to see fantasticks on broadway, I have to say it was really good the guy who wrote the play actually performed in the show he was hilarious, aftewards when the actors were coming out he stopped and started telling jokes. I have to say I love the show!.Score: 5/5

Meh...I enjoied the movie when I saw it. The music was good and the story was fun. However, it was all glitz with nothing behind the plot to drive the story home. It's okay as something cute to stick in and keep the kids entertained for an hour+ but it's not a great movie by any means..Score: 3/5
Oh dear.I performed this musical as "Matt" last year. I'm very dissapointed that the artistic direction from this movie was an almost complete departure from the live show. Songs, blocking, lines, monologues, even charactors, are all vastly skewed or altered. Almost nothing is the same. The best thing about this movie is, despite how their lines and songs were changed, the actors and actresses played the roles exactly how they were meant to be played. But beyond that, this movie it a terrible memoriam to "The Longest Running Off-Broadway Show Ever"..Score: 2/5

Not Romeo and Juliet....Its actually based on the Ovidian version of Pyramus and Thisbe (which, Romeo and Juliet was loosely based off). When I was a FReshman in High School (going back to 1989), my Latin teacher taught us reading parts of Ovid and other Roman writers, and we studied Pyramus and Thisbe. and then went to see the Fantasticks, and had to write a paper on how it translated to modern times. the movie, as far as on-screen translations of the play, iosn;t too bad, but you lose the idea of the half-round theater that it was meant to be shown in, plua a movie is never as good as a live performance (look at Rent or Phantom of the Opera - while I loved both, its not the same -the only movie that compared was Chicago... and that was very much the work of the screenwriter and director - plus the material translated well). This moviue is at the least etertaining, and worth it for those who never made it to NYC to see the show (a;ways recommended).Score: 3/5
**Not a family film**With a PG rating I'm not sure how they managed to shove in so many innuendos and flashes of skin as they did. While the plot is interesting the previously mentioned items did NOT add to it one bit. They were distracting and unfortunately made this show one that could not be comfortably viewed by a truly PG audience..Score: 1/5
It's better than orginally thoughtI saw people's review of this movie. I did not really have high hopes even though one of my favorite artists, Joey Mcintyre, is in the film. I won't tell anyone this is the best movie I have ever seen, but I don't think it's as horrible as people make it out be. I was drawn in by the love story of the younger characters and the music was pretty good. I like musicals, but not all musicals I like. This one was decent. It would say that even if I saw it on stage. Pretty much, if you are a Joey Mac fan--- watch the movie! If you are not a fan, have an open mind and form your own opinion. A really horrible movie...I'm very much a fan of musicals from the 1980's on but this I could not stand. The plot was clichéd and very over done and there was no connection between the love interests in the film. On top of that, I wasted over an hour of my life that I will never be able to get back. The setting was the only authentic part of this movie but due to poor visual effects, it degraded the scenery. I give this movie 1 star for it's annoying singing and lack of direction..Score: 1/5
