Visually beautiful, full of imaginative sets, and splendidly photographed in rich Technicolor, this enchanting fantasy was Twentieth Century Fox's answer to "The Wizard of Oz". In a rare departure from her usual screen persona, Shirley plays a selfish, spoiled little girl named Mytyl, who doesn't appreciate her loving family. Only after a good fairy sends her and her brother (Johnny Russell) on a journey to find "the bird that means happiness" does she end up discovering happiness right in her own home.

A pair of peasant children, Mytyl and her brother Tyltyl, are led on a magical quest for the fabulous Blue Bird of Happiness by the Fairy Berylune. On their journey, they are accompanied by the humanized presences of a Dog, a Cat, Light, Fire, Bread, and other entities.

Por fin, encuentran un lugar apacible: el Reino del Futuro, donde esperan su nacimiento generaciones enteras. Allí vive El Padre del Tiempo, que observa cuidadosamente lo que la tierra puede necesitar. En su viaje los niños han descrito un círculo completo para encontrar El Pájaro Azul de la Felicidad, que, en definitiva, estaba donde había estado siempre: en su propia casa.

Másrészt a történelmi szituáció okán: a hetvenes évek első felében ugyanis úgy tűnt, a két nagyhatalom a közeledés politikáját választja. Eljött hát az ideje annak is, hogy egy szovjet-amerikai koprodukciós film készüljön, így a Lenfilm és a 20th Century Fox összefogott! Harmadrészt azért, mert ez Maeterlinck színdarabjának harmadik filmes feldolgozása: az elsőt Maurice Tourneur (1918), a másodikat Walter Lang (1940) jegyzi. A szimbolikus mesében két gyerek keresi a Kék madarat, vagyis a boldogságot. Az üzenet pedig Jane Fonda megfogalmazásában így hangzik: "Az ember csak akkor lehet igazán boldog, ha mindenki boldog körülötte."
