UNCERTAIN is a visually stunning and disarmingly funny portrait of the literal and figurative troubled waters of Uncertain, Texas. In a 94-resident town so tucked away “you’ve got to be lost to find it”, three Uncertain men make their own bids for survival looking to find a more certain future. An ex-convict obsessed with Mr. Ed, a gigantic boar he hunts in order to stay on the straight and narrow. A young idealist with big plans but few prospects looking for a bigger life. And an aging fisherman learning to let go of his youthful ways, and making peace with a fateful moment thirty years ago. All the while Uncertain’s vast, swampy lake is being choked by an aquatic weed, upsetting the natural balance and the town’s only source of livelihood. From award-winning director’s Ewan McNicol and Anna Sandilands, UNCERTAIN is an outstanding feature debut capturing a vivid cast of characters as compelling as any fiction.
A keen observation of a sun-dappled and still-watered swamp, Uncertain contemplates a frequently overlooked and enigmatic town whose lake, and only real source of income, comes under threat from an aquatic nuisance of the botanical variety. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a site so-named, there is a lack of consensus about the Texas town's origin: whether the result of a surveyor's confusion when marking an early map, or steamboat captains' belief that docking there was an unknowable, impossible task, an auspicious beginning is offered for the unsettled and yearning inhabitants.

Boring and pointlessI feel like everyone is saying this is great because it's what you're supposed to say when confronted with so much pathos and suffering. And the film is technically well done. But it is just so boring and pointless. The people arent all that interesting after a few minutes, they dont grow or change, the challenges they face are mundane, and there's just no learning or tension or anything to sustain interest. It's like a really well-shot episode of Duck Dynasty, without the laughs. Skip it..Score: 3/5
