A riveting World War II thriller that is filled with espionage and romance in equal measure, The Exception follows German soldier Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney) as he goes on a mission to investigate exiled German Monarch Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer). The Kaiser lives in Huis Doorn, a secluded mansion just outside of Utretcht in the Netherlands, and as Germany is taking over Holland, the country’s authorities are concerned that Dutch spies may be watching the Kaiser. As Brandt begins to infiltrate the Kaiser’s life in search of clues, he finds himself drawn into an unexpected and passionate romance with Mieke (Lily James), one of the Kaiser’s maids whom Brandt soon discovers is secretly Jewish. When Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan), Head of the SS, makes an unexpected visit with a large platoon of Nazis in tow, the stage is set for a breathtaking showdown, as secrets are revealed, allegiances are tested, and Brandt is forced to make the ultimate choice between honoring his country and following his heart.
Nothing is as it seems in this riveting World War 2 thriller as a wary soldier goes to investigate a mysterious German monarch at his secluded mansion, leading him into a web of deceit and a dangerous love affair with a local Jewish woman.

Outstanding! So happy I rented it!This wonderful entertainment will likely not bore you for a moment! Christopher Plummer portrays a delightful Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany in exile in Holland during WWII. A Jewish maid employed by the Kaiser and a Nazi Captain begin a "romance". Fine acting, implausible perhaps! Just enjoy it!.Score: 5/5
What a Beautiful MessTHE EXCEPTION is one of those movies where you settle into the couch with a glass of wine and just enjoy the simplicity and slight ridiculousness of it. Does it really make sense, not at all, but you will enjoy the campiness and missmatch of it. There are 2 movies in here: one a prestige drama staring the impeccable Christopher Plummer and Janet McTeer as the exiled German Kaiser and his wife who yearn to return to their homeland and find some redemption and perhaps former glory in their twilight years. The second movie is a sexy spy thriller with Lily James and Jai Courtney who can't keep their eyes or hands off each other to overcome the prejudices instilled in the Nazis regime. It's not the best movie, but boy will you be in for a ride..Score: 3/5

Its a nice change of pace from typical Hollywood films.I never thought I'd ever agree with Rotten Tomatoes on liking a movie that they like in turn. If you are looking for a fast action packed movie then this is not for you. This is a film about finding and listening to your true self even as it collides with what you held dear. It has a charm and beautiful simplicity about it. The cast is truly amazing and the message is a refreshing change and in a way an inspiring note that there is good in even the darkest of times..Score: 5/5
BoringI have no complaints about the acting, but that can’t save a movie that’s plainly written. I don’t know how these reviews can say it was an action, tense, thriller. It had about 30 min. Of entertaining content. The rest was just boring..Score: 2/5

EntertainingI concur with the RT review blurbs from AO Scott (NYT), Peter DeBruge (Variety), and Kenneth Turan (LAT). WWII romantic thriller with excellent performances and a nice bit of historicity about Germany’s political scene around the former Kaiser Wilhelm. Fun-to-watch seems an odd way to describe a yarn around mid-20th c. German nationalism and racism, but the overall setting of the film, the intrusion of live-in Nazi’s on the regal estate of a still vibrant and storytelling Kaiser Wilhelm in an attempt to protect themselves against any domestic or foreign interest in reinstating or influence-peddling the Kaiser against the nightmare of Hitler, is a solid formula for a foreboding intrigue-plot that is well executed by this production and its players..Score: 4/5
