From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Pretty wonderfulYes, there is a lot of heartbreak in the film. But it’s not about heartbreak. It’s also not just about surviving your circumstances. It’s about living and not allowing yourself to accept what you assume is your fate. There’s a lot of truth here about ethics and integrity and entitlement and compassion. And it’s very funny. A lot of humor can come from overcoming adversity or tragedy or fear and empowering inspiration is often derived from little personal victories. Those are things we can all understand and to which we can all relate. The period detail is so authentic that you just kind of forget it was recently filmed. The acting is terrific, especially from the three leads. Giamatti’s role must have been written specifically for him because it’s impossible to imagine anyone else playing the part. The set design is rich and full of character and the writing is honest and witty and frequently emotional without becoming exploitive or maudlin. I can’t imagine changing a thing.
