Deutsch Teenager Derek und sein kleiner Bruder Tobey sind neu in der Stadt und wissen noch nicht, dass man die Abkürzung zur High School über das verwilderte Gelände der mysteriösen Familie Hartley besser nicht benutzt. Zu viel Schlimmes sei da den Gerüchten zufolge bereits geschehen. Tobey aber lässt sich nicht abschrecken, stolpert prompt über einen toten Hund und wird vom alten Mr. Hartley verjagt. Das aber macht Derek nur neugierig. Gemeinsam mit dem Schulrowdy, der seinen Hund vermisst, will er das Hartley-Haus einer nächtlichen Inspektion unterziehen.
