Darker, edgier, and more violent but still magnificent Miyazaki entry.With PRINCESS MONONOKE, Hayao Miyazaki crafted his most ambitious -- and unabashedly most adult -- achievement to date. In some ways a successor to his 1984 NAUSICAA, this film adopts more shades of gray than his previous entry. There's no major villain or hero, for instance, and the resolution to the story is more ambiguous. It's also quite violent for a Ghibli movie, with moments of blood splattering and occasional severed limbs. But Miyazaki thankfully avoids overpresenting such potentially grisly moments, making this film arguably more tame than the likes of, say, AKIRA, PERFECT BLUE, or even NINJA SCROLL. That it carries a sincere, honest heart is also a bonus. The dub track, recorded in 1999, still holds up well today, with an excellent script penned by Neil Gaiman (CORALINE) and great vocal performances by the likes of Billy Crudup, Minnie Driver, Gillian Andersen, and especially Keith David. The casting of Billy Bob Thornton as a snarky monk has rubbed some people the wrong way, but even he turns in a solid performance. Claire Danes has the occasional iffy moment as San, but otherwise she manages to portray this character as an emotionally conflicted, raw, untamed girl struggling between her aversion to humans and her attraction to the lead character. FinallyI can’t believe how much money I just spent buying almost every Studio Ghibli movie now available on iTunes despite owning them on disc. 🤦🏻♂️I love these movies so I definitely am happy to finally have them where I can watch them easily while traveling. I noticed a few rare complaints in the reviews of some of the Ghibli movies stating they they lacked Japanese audio but I assure you that the HD versions do have the option to switch to Japanese subtitles under the iTunes extras which is great for those who love both subbed & dubbed considering some popular anime movies are sold separately in each language. 😔Princess Monoke is definitely one of my favorite movies and it reminds us how we need to respect the balance of nature lest we destroy ourselves..NimirRajScore: 5/5
