Put together a gloomy New England house, a dark night and four of America's legendary leading men and you have all the ingredients for the classic Ghost Story, a spellbinding motion picture based on the bestseller by Peter Straub. Co-starring Patricia Neal, Ghost Story is about the Members of the Chowder Society: Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and John Houseman, who get together each week to share tales of horror. Soon, however, a secret terror invades the group, and one by one, they die mysteriously because of a real life ghost story that is part of their past.
Four successful elderly gentlemen, members of the Chowder Society, share a gruesome, 50-year-old secret. When one of Edward Wanderley's twin sons dies in a bizarre accident, the group begins to see a pattern of frightening events developing.

Something forgottenThis is the type of story you tell around a camp fire. Its deliciously creepy from the start, and the ending will leave you with goose bumps for days. I loved it. These older films just seem to have a quality lost in todays cinema..Score: 5/5

This is an example of a movie that needed to be a series.I've read the book this is based on 4 times. I've also begged Peter Straubb to let me ghost write a sequel. It is one of the few pieces of literature that changed my life. That said, this movie adaptation is... good for what it is. I like lots of what it pulled togethere. But it is a strong example of how movies fail books when television adaptions can do so much more. If this story had a second chance with HBO, I could die happy..Score: 4/5
Forget RT, it’s 5 starsThere are just a few films that are truly haunting, and this one ranks near the top. No CGI or special effects, just a really good story as a base, and fantastic acting all around. Book is even BETTER & does a better job of clarifying WHAT the woman really IS..Score: 5/5
NightmaresAs a kid we had Showtime, just one movie channel, and a huge antenna on our house, this was the first movie a saw previewed on Showtime, ONLY the preview, and it had me awake at night, I saw it many years later (adult) and it freaked me the hell out..Score: 5/5

This is Horror, not eye candy...This ain’t kid’s stuff. When it released to home video (1982), I hadn’t heard of it. But I bought it because of well known actors, figuring it couldn’t be too bad if all these guys were in it. I’ve watched it many times over the years, and it creeps me out each and every time even though I know the story well. The female lead of this tale is played by Alice Krige (best known as the Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact). Her performance was so intense and chilling; I believe it actually damaged her film career for many years – too real and haunting for casting Directors to image her in other roles. Houseman, Astaire, Douglas, and Fairbanks were all superb (and we expect that!); it’s Krige that made this movie great. As I said, this ain’t kid’s stuff: it’s not flashy, gory, visual shock candy. Instead, it’s a story that unfolds with angst, tension, regret, guilt, and justice. Oh, and it’s scary too. WARNING: Do not show this film to children and young adults (especially those showing some intelligence and maturity): it all feels so real and plausible. It’ll haunt you; it will damage them..Score: 5/5

Classic Ghost StoryThis movie may be from 1981 but it's still a classic story. The acting is top-notch and the effects are creepy without being gorey. This is a truly scary movie. It's been a favourite of mine since it came out and it has held up over time quite nicely..Score: 5/5
A Treat!I remember as a child seeing this movie poster (different form the one illustrated on this page) with my parents in line for some other movie and wanting to go see this movie rather than whatever they deemed good family fare. It was well with the thirty some odd year wait! Effects a little dated, but a fun, not too gory, well acted, good plot, nicely told, gem of an old fashioned ghost story. BOO!.Score: 5/5
Good classicI watched this when I was young....(yes I was allowed to watch horror movies when my much older sister babysat me lol). My guess is this is why I love horror movies today! Anyway back to the point....So as a child, this movie stuck with me for good and when I watched it now, it still is a good story but the horror isn’t as scary as new films but still scary this many years later..Score: 5/5
