The lives and relationships of those within a British traditional touring stage company provide the backdrop for THE DRESSER, a compelling study of the intense relationship between the leader of the company and his dresser. Sir (Albert Finney), a grandiloquent old man of the theater, has given his soul to his career, but his tyrannical rule over the company is now beginning to crack under the strain of age and illness and he prepares for his two hundred twenty-seventh performance of King Lear.
In a touring Shakespearean theater group, a backstage hand - the dresser, is devoted to the brilliant but tyrannical head of the company. He struggles to support the deteriorating star as the company struggles to carry on during the London blitz. The pathos of his backstage efforts rival the pathos in the story of Lear and the Fool that is being presented on-stage, as the situation comes to a crisis.

For the Love of ActingOh man - what a joy. Albert Finney (one of the greatest actors) and Tom Courtenay (excellent) holding their own together in scene after scene exploring the human condition. Not to mention the wonderful conceit of having the relationship mirror that of Lear and his Fool. Brilliant..Score: 5/5
Performance par excellenceThe first time I saw this movie I was amazed at the brilliance of even the supporting actors. Towards the end of the movie, following the death of Sir, Norman, the dresser, played by Tom Courtenay, has a complete meltdown. It is brilliant and heartbreaking, the performance of a lifetime. I understand when filming of that scene ended the crew broke out into a well-earned standing ovation for this brilliant and under-appreciated actor..Score: 5/5
