When Beijing journalist Ga Yu arrives in a remote Tibetan village, he immediately finds himself embedded in a relentless manhunt across the barren waste lands of Kekexili. Acting without the Chinese government's approval, this ragtag group of impoverished vigilantes has sworn to capture or kill the poachers responsible for decimating the sacred antelope of Kekexili. As the harsh landscape overcomes them and the ruthless poachers begin picking them off, Ga Yu realizes that it isn't merely a manhunt he is chronicling, but a profound journey of survival and faith.

Заради козината им, която се използва за направата на луксозни, но незаконни шалове, броят на антилопите е драстично намалял през последните 20 години; бракониерите буквално изтребват животните, често по цели стада наведнъж. През 1990 г. местни жители сформират доброволен патрул, за да се опитат да предотвратят нелегалното избиване на антилопите, често с цената на своя живот. Кекесили проследява борбата на живот и смърт между доброволците и бракониерите, а филмът е заснет в самия резерват, намиращ се на 5000 метра надморска височина, на Куинзан-тибетското плато. Когато Га Ю - журналист от Пекин, пристига в мистичния лагер на Кекесилския планински патрул, той става свидетел на тибетски погребалeн ритуал и вижда цялото село, потънало в траур.
