MasterfulThis film is like Hitchcock for the modern era - a great, expertly-crafted gothic mystery. Irons, Close and Silver are brilliant. The storytelling is excellent, the soundtrack is ideal, and the entire thing is absolutely first rate. The music is perfect for this, recalling the emptyness and somber solitude of deep space in the 1968 classic 2001. Very effective. It is a thinking person's film, so the pacing is methodical and slow, yet compelling. The narrative device works extremely well and is deftly written, revealing the anger, depression, and self-absolving nature of the person as they were known to be in real life. I've seen thousands of films and who-knows how many mysteries and docudramas, but this film is one of the rare ones that kept me nervously involved (and slightly creeped out) throughout. At the conclusion I was left in a very sober mood, affected enough that I was not prepared to simply jump to the next activity. Let me put it this way: If it is lated on a cold and rainy night and you are looking for a bone-deep chill that will make you appreciate your fireplace and warm brandy, this would do the trick..Score: 5/5
Reversal of FortuneI don't remember why I started watching this movie, but it really drew me in. You never stop thinking of Claus as anything but a creep--and he never denies that he is a creep, which makes Jeremy Irons performance chilling and hysterical. But it is the change in perspective that keeps the movie interesting. Could this jerk really be innocent?.Score: 5/5
