Thomas Jerome Newton, a mysterious and complex personality, appears in New York. Despite his curiously frail physical presence, the strength of his intellect and scientific knowledge appear to transcend contemporary human experience. His inventions are of such originality that they will revolutionize the nation's systems of communication, and lead, in approximately three years, to the creating of the largest corporate empire in the United States ...
Thomas Jerome Newton is an alien who has come to Earth in search of water to save his home planet. Aided by lawyer Oliver Farnsworth, Thomas uses his knowledge of advanced technology to create profitable inventions. While developing a method to transport water, Thomas meets Mary-Lou, a quiet hotel clerk, and begins to fall in love with her. Just as he is ready to leave Earth, Thomas is intercepted by the U.S. government, and his entire plan is threatened.

PainfulThis is the worst movie I have ever suffered through in my entire life. Nothing of significance happens throughout the entire film. I kept waiting for SOMETHING to happen, but it never did. This is the only movie I've ever seen that was actually physically painful to watch. Not even David Bowie saved this film..Score: 1/5

Left Me With an Undulating Reaction...Firstly, I found this film to be a brilliant depiction of how our society distracts us from what is truly important in our lives. This is ingeniously portrayed by Newton (the alien) getting tangled up into a world of sex, alcohol, and money. All of which lead to his remaining on Earth rather than transporting water from Earth back to his home-planet. His neglect of his wife and children lead to their death. The extreme aging process that every character, who deals with newton, undergoes, was also quite well done. The government conspiracy against Newton and their attempts at not revealing him to be extraterrestrial to the general public was also a high point in the film. David Bowie's performance is so believable that at one point I doubted whether or not he really was an alien. But unfortunately he wasn't enough to save this film... Even though these four aspects of the movie were perfect, it is also far too long. Not that an enjoyable movie can't have a reasonable amount of length to it but I found that this movie includes scene after scene of pointless information, events, and insights of characters that are entirely irrelevant to the plot. While many of the sex scenes in the film were dramatic and beautiful, most were unnecessary displays of nudity that was far too common in such 70's films (more or less a gimmick to get adolescent boys buying tickets). Although I enjoyed much of this movie, I doubt that I will watch it again anytime soon, simply due to the fact that when the film concludes, the viewer is left with unresolved scenes that allow one to question why the movie was so painfully long..Score: 3/5
