  • 2010

Winner of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for documentary, RESTREPO chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. The movie focuses on 15 soldiers based at "Outpost Restrepo," named after a platoon medic killed early in the deployment. Filmed by author Sebastian Junger ("War") and award-winning photographer Tim Hetherington, RESTREPO takes viewers on their own 90-minute deployment, without comment or agenda. This is war, full stop. A National Geographic Entertainment release.

Restrepo Film Synopsis

Directors Hetherington and Junger spend a year with the 2nd Battalion of the United States Army located in one of Afghanistan's most dangerous valleys. The documentary provides insight and empathy on how to win the battle through hard work, deadly gunfights and mutual friendships while the unit must push back the Taliban.

ObservationsI would have liked to watch a documentary like this during the time of the war in Iraq, years ago because it was all very mysterious. You would think that there would be more useful tactical technology available for that type of combat. They did have a fairly organized camp. There was too much swearing rather than a consenus about the job but I mean the general did ask some questions, it was okay, yet I myself wouldn't feel that good there, not unless the team had the spirit more for themselves. Restrepo tarjoaa kohahduttavan näkymän Afganistanin sodan todellisuuteen. Elokuva on kuitenkin ennen kaikkea sarja vahvoja henkilökuvia. Muun muassa Justin, Kevin, Jason ja Steve – he kaikki alkavat vähitellen tuntua läheisiltä.

Which Way Is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim HetheringtonDocumentary2013

On April 20, 2011, shortly after the release of his documentary “Restrepo” — and only six weeks after attending the Oscar® ceremony as a nominee — photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington was killed by mortar fire in the city of Misrata, Libya, where he’d been covering the civil war. He bled out in the back of a pick-up truck while being raced to the hospital, comforted by a Spanish photojournalist who was holding his hand and trying to keep him awake. Those moments ended a brilliant ten-year career in which Hetherington not only covered such dramatic frontline stories as Liberia and Afghanistan, but also transcended the conventional boundaries of image making to become one of the most important journalists of his generation.

Red Star Line (TV documentary)Red Star Line

Using the story of the Red Star Line as a narrative vessel, this three-part documentary by Daniël Cattier and Fabio Wuytack explains why European emigrants left their homes behind for an uncertain future. It details their trips to Antwerp, their travel across the ocean, and their adjustments to their new lives in America. Theirs are intimate yet epic journeys in which past and present merge in the forging of new identities. The film, which is shot on location in Antwerp, New York, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine, uses ‘emotional archaeology’ to weave a richer narrative than could be conveyed through a string of facts and figures. And walking in the footsteps of Red Star Line passengers, surprising similarities are revealed to the experiences of modern immigrants.
