Winner of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for documentary, RESTREPO chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. The movie focuses on 15 soldiers based at "Outpost Restrepo," named after a platoon medic killed early in the deployment. Filmed by author Sebastian Junger ("War") and award-winning photographer Tim Hetherington, RESTREPO takes viewers on their own 90-minute deployment, without comment or agenda. This is war, full stop. A National Geographic Entertainment release.
Directors Hetherington and Junger spend a year with the 2nd Battalion of the United States Army located in one of Afghanistan's most dangerous valleys. The documentary provides insight and empathy on how to win the battle through hard work, deadly gunfights and mutual friendships while the unit must push back the Taliban.

Belongs in a special category I call “Required Viewing"When you get into the real belly of the real monster that war is, it should make you wiser. Among my many thoughts were, “if GoPro cameras came into existence 75 years ago, showing us the horror and in some cases, folly, of war, we’d have made much wiser choices about it over the years.” It was just heart breaking to witness these young men enduring all the stress of combat and the heartbreak of seeing some of their brother soldiers die in front of them. SpeechlessI’m a film fanatic. I’ve seen pretty much every picture at one time or another. There’s never been a documentary or feature that impacted me to this degree. Not even close. It felt like someone physically punched my in the gut. To characterize what Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger accomplished here as simply a movie really doesn’t do it justice. ObservationsI would have liked to watch a documentary like this during the time of the war in Iraq, years ago because it was all very mysterious. It looks like they only had one type of gun, and saw a bit of technology, yet the soldiers were just using their rifle scopes to look for enemies. You would think that there would be more useful tactical technology available for that type of combat. They did have a fairly organized camp. There was too much swearing rather than a consenus about the job but I mean the general did ask some questions, it was okay, yet I myself wouldn't feel that good there, not unless the team had the spirit more for themselves. I don't think that I like hearing about hearts and minds, but they should just be a team and they didn't want to stay for the extra thousand dollars? Boy is that ever nuts.
