Batman: Year One"Batman: Year One" is the first Batman graphic novel I read. This story has always had a special place in my collection because it made me love Batman. The graphic novel is raw and gritty. It blatantly shows the decrepit city of Gotham and the corrupt politicians and mobsters running it. I feel like this animated movie stayed true to the book the best it could without becoming a rated "R" feature. I love the book and I love the movie. It brought to life the story I have read over and over..Score: 5/5
Spot On...A spot on adaptation of Frank Miller's 1986 Graphic Novel, which originally re-launched the Batman Comics line so they could start with a clean slate, without the 45 + years of history. The film retains the 1980's tone , grit and mature themes which made the book such a classic, and if you go back to Batman Begins, you can see just how much that film owes to this very short work of genius. The story focuses both on Bruce Wayne's first year in Gotham after 12 years of training abroad to be crime fighter, as well as Jim Gordon's first your on the Gotham PD, which is as corrupt as can be and headed by the rotten Commissioner Loeb. Both stumble in their first attempts to clean up the city, but things get better as they learn the ropes and eventually learn they need each other to survive and clean up the town. Don't expect Batman's famous adversaries yet, the main villains are the corrupt elite of Gotham, headed by Loeb and top mob boss Carmine (The Roman) Falcone. And there is also the parallel appearance of Selina Kyle, or Catwoman, as well as a brief appearance by Assistant DA Harvey Dent (the Future Two-Face). The film has some very good character development for Jim Gordon, as well as a great action set piece with Batman taking on an entire swat team in an abandoned burning building. The animation is excellent, clean, crisp and respectful of comic book artist David mazzucchelli's stark artwork, and the voice cast is top notch, with the exception of Ben Mckenzie, who's portrayal of Batman was very wooden in places. But Brian Cranston's Gordon more than picks up the slack. Hopefully this will be a spring board for adapting some of the other great Batman comics set in the character's early years, such as Prey, Gothic, Long Halloween and the Man Who Laughs..Score: 4/5
Fun movie for the true origins of batmanPersonally the graphic novel was a little better but the movie adaptation is still quite good. The voice acting is quite good, the only complaint i have is that Ben's batman sounds like he read the script directly into his mic so he sounds a bit monotone at times. The animation is where this movie shines, all their motiona are fluid and their looks arent altered very much from the graphic novel. One thing that might upset viewers is lack of an actual batman, he only appears a few times throughout the film, this movie focusses on Gordon and the corruption in Gotham, not Batman. Overall i was quite impresses, so im giving it a 8.5/10..Score: 4/5

Carbon CopyThis latest DC animated film installment doesn't disappoint for fans of Batman: Year One. Every scene is lifted straight from the comic book, put into motion, and given a resonating sound. Its visual style envokes the tone of the source material and injects its own unique vibe that compliments the inspiring art from the comic book. The standout voice talent would definitely go to Bryan Cranston as the righteous Lt. James Gordon. Fans of Batman The Animated Series will miss the voice acting of Kevin Conroy. However, Benjamin Mackenzie, I found to be interesting in this part as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The youth in his voice serves to remind the audience that this is Batman/Bruce Wayne in his youth. Mackenzie's scenes as Bruce Wayne were good, because he sounded pretencious, lacking any depth. This is a good thing when portraying Bruce Wayne. Though, as Batman, Mackenzie fails to bring the graveness in his voice that Kevin Conroy made famous. Overall, the voice acting was good but lacked an organic quality; the acting seemed too wooden. Mackenzie was especially wooden in his performance. As much as I liked the comic books moody and dark imagery, this animated version of the story brings it to life. Though, I think more could have been done to make this movie "pop". The action scenes in this feature were very well done, adding a new dimension to the scenes from the comic book. In fact, the animation style in general works really well with this story. You can tell that a lot of thought was put into the look of the movie. The direction is very good, but tends to fall short in pacing. Some scenes, in my opinion, should have been paced slower; the movie seems rushed in parts. This movie, just as the comic book depicts, is just as much about Batman as it is about Jim Gordon. As it should be. Batman could not operate without Jim Gordon and Jim Gordon could not clean up the police department without Batman. Their relationship is symbiotic and rooted in a place of genuine caring for their fellow man. They are both willing to make great sacrifices in their lives to build a better tomorrow. Despite their flaws, they both recognize the good in eachother and respects the other's sense of duty and morality. Most viewers who have enjoyed DC's animated movies will find this a satisfying adaptation. Batman Year One will inevitably be compared to Batman: Under The Red Hood. Under The Red Hood is the better film, but Year One is undoubtedly a film you shouldn't miss if you're a Batman fan..Score: 4/5
