A rare lovely thought provoking gemRented this movie with an open mind and returned to buy it after watching the rental 3 times. I am still thinking about the concepts discussed, although I found the last 30 minutes to be the real 'meat' of the thing. Relevant no matter what year you watch it - it covers things we all struggle with - then, now and always. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who wants a movie that leaves you thinking and a little wiser for having spent time with it..Score: 5/5

Wally has heard some disturbing rumors about Andre’s odd mental state. But once he gets around to asking what he’s been up to the past few years, Andre opens up and relates tales of his travels to the corners of the globe—and of his own heart, mind and soul—in search of elusive enlightenment. Wally listens with rapt attention, until he must make a stand for rationality, attempting to refute Andre’s mysticism with a more practical, pragmatic view of life and the modern world. And that’s about it: Two hours of food-for-thought conversation, in a screenplay which “wrote itself” as the edited cream of excerpts from dozens of hours of dialog between the principals. In this timeless treasure, they discourse passionately on every topic from art to life and death to eating sand in the Sahara. But it’s not like we’re eavesdropping; it’s more like we’re Wally, hearing of experiences we’re never likely to have as related by a friend we’d be lucky to find. Gregory is a captivating raconteur: opinionated but self-effacing; energetic without being overbearing; recounting with humor his deadly serious philosophical search. What’s his quest all about? Even he isn’t certain. “It has something to do with living,” he says. “To know what’s it’s like to be truly alive.” Joseph Campbell, late in life, summarized his wisdom by saying “The meaning of life is the experience of being alive.” Gregory illustrates this principle—as well as the difficulty of distilling experience into words, and of wresting meaning from experience.
