A year after his brother Tom's death, Jack (Duplass) is still struggling emotionally. When he makes a scene at a memorial party, Tom's best friend Iris (Blunt) offers up her family cabin on an island in the Pacific Northwest so Jack can seek catharsis in solitude. Once there, however, he runs into Iris' sister Hannah (Dewitt) who is reeling from the abrupt end of a seven-year relationship and finds solace in Tom's unexpected presence. A blurry evening of drinking concludes with an awkward sexual incident, made worse by Iris' sudden presence at the cabin the next morning.
Iris invites her friend Jack to stay at her family's island getaway after the death of his brother. At their remote cabin, Jack's drunken encounter with Hannah, Iris' sister, kicks off a revealing stretch of days.

Wow! I love this movie! But don't bother watching it unless you have a thoughtful, feeling heart. There are so many bad movies out there. Movies without a heart. This movie has a heart. It deals with sibling relationships and keeping them true, and "real"--and ALIVE while there's natural life left; and it deals with mature love that can forgive and grow in ways that might seem frightening, or threatening. I read so many superficial, stupid, negative reviews about this movie and almost didn't rent it. You poor people----you missed the entire point! This movie isn't about entertainment, sex, or even just romantic love. This movie is about human bonds that go so deep and we often don't nurture and care for them until death has severed them and then we have the ache of regret. This movie tells a beautiful love story. I really hope everyone will watch it….and while watching--- not miss the point..Score: 5/5
Full of sweet surpriseI saw this little film at the Seattle International Film Festival. What a well crafted delight. The story and setting are very simple and humor is sometimes subtle, but the script and performances, particularly by Blunt and DeWitt, are intelligent. If your looking for whacky guffaws - this isn't the film for you. Director Lynn Shelton is going to go to do great things..Score: 4/5
Interesting film…..This was a good movie- but the way it ended left me feeling that it was also strange, and the characters are kind of confusing to me. I don't believe the resolution is realistic, but I am intrigued and inspired by it at the same time. I am glad I watched it- definitely worth seeing as it's thought provoking. It is a fresh movie..Score: 4/5
I love this movie!!I saw this movie in the theaters when it opened in June and was so happy to catch it here again as it disappeared from theaters too quickly. It is funny, heart-felt and all the characters are wonderful (especially Rosemary DeWitt). I think this was the best film Emily Blunt has been since PRADA. Beautiful piece of filmographyThis is a wonderful work of film art! It is moving, touching, emotional, and even funny. And it portrays sibling relationships, and relationships is general, in the best way. I enjoyed it thoroughly!.Score: 4/5
TornI loved the actors and thought they did great, and I loved the overall theme of the movie. Pretty tranquil considering all the stuff that goes down, I could even deal with ending at first up until the very last scene. But then I started thinking about the logic of the situation and started getting a bit weirded out, so I'm torn..Score: 3/5

I liked it, but not all that funny, I did not get the humor.I would call the movie a drama maybe, but I would not call it a comedy..Score: 4/5
Not a great film, not worth the rent.I just saw, "Safety Not Guaranteed". Which was in the same genre style of this film and had the same lead actor (Mark Duplass). And I usually really enjoy the acting from the rest of the actors in this film, but the dialogue was slow and there was no chemistry from any actor during the first 30 mins. Because I shut it off. Mike Birbiglia started us off and was great. After that, the film went down hill. Even the yelling scene together I felt like something was off with Mike's and Mark's characters. I enjoy these films and this just wasn't one. Give it a try on Netflix maybe you'll like it but don't rent or buy..Score: 1/5
