The Summit (2013) Movie Summary

  • 2013
  • FULL HD

In August, 2008, 18 mountain climbers reached the top of K2. 48 hours later, 11 people were dead. While memorials paid tribute to those killed, there were also condemnations about ‘the why.' Why do these athletes risk everything to reach a place humans are simply not meant to go? With breathtaking cinematography and jaw dropping reenactments based on the testimony of those who survived the climb, this thrilling film is about the very nature of adventure in the modern world.

The Summit Film Synopsis

The air swarms with hidden energies and engines, invisible broadcasts crackling ominously. History is written in midair, written on the wind, above the clouds or at Ceiling Zero. Secretly. A lethal murmur out of earshot. Scribbled in code. Voices drowned by the roar and the fog of war, spelled out in ruins. This film was originally made in the 1980s and never released until 2023.

Honors the true heroesThe Summit isn’t just a run-of-the-mill docudrama of a tragedy. The movie also honors the actions of admirable mountaineers like Ger MacDonald, Marco and Pemba. These men resisted the temptation of the “every man for himself" mentality that high-altitude climbers face when things get dangerous. Instead, they risked their lives, and in one case gave their life, in an effort to save their fellow climbers. They are an inspiration to climbers everywhere, and this movie honors their strength and character!.Score: 5/5

Bravery I'll Never Pretend to PossessDisclaimer: I am not a climber. I was blown away not only by Pemba, Ger, and Marco's heroism, but by the effect that the lack of oxygen had on the memories of the men and the woman who almost perished on K2 in 2008 (everyone had a different story). The K2 footage was gorgeous, down to the ominous pointed shadow of K2. There was a confusing story structure to the film, however, with the interspersed commentary of the 1954 Italian climber. I wasn't always sure whose story I was following. Perhaps that confusion was the point. Overall a great film, however. The spirit of K2, sparkling, mocking, and deceptively out of reach, is no friend to Hominidae..Score: 4/5

Interesting interviews & beautiful sceneryThe storyline is a bit disjointed and confusing. The participants were also confused and oxygen deprived at the time. Character exploration was revealing and interesting. Never could determine if they brought that dead body down to Camp 4. Tony Parra (Grant Landry, Bride & Prejudice Australia) is a sensitive social worker stationed in Saint Agnes, a rundown, neighborhood hospital where he tirelessly works to “save” every hard luck case that comes through the door. Leo Kessler (Jaimie Fauth, Rubdown), his partner of three years, is a financial planner who wants nothing more than to have his “overly-diverse” small business narrow to a few key wealthy clients, have Tony quit his job and have both of them permanently relocate to the DC suburbs where they only associate with a high caliber of clientele. Tony lands one final case before Christmas: an abandoned premature infant, whom he names Dylan. Despite Saint Agnes’ limited resources and the dire condition in which the baby arrives, Dylan survives. After three months, Dylan is released from the hospital, only to be returned by the adoptive parents that Tony finds for him, because they come to believe (thanks to Tony’s hard-nosed boss Heidi), that Dylan is a crack baby. Knowing the stigma the baby now faces, Tony turns to Leo; he wants them to adopt Dylan. “He’s our baby, Leo.” Damaged by his own turbulent childhood, but motivated by his love for Tony, Leo reluctantly says “Yes”. Caring for Dylan, a high maintenance infant, is second nature to Tony. However, tending to Dylan’s needs is alien to Leo and he is endlessly frustrated. His inability to “manage” Dylan becomes an embarrassment for Leo. His complete lack of nurturing instincts soon drives a wedge between the couple. Exactly what Leo feared seems to be happening: Tony seems to have chosen Dylan over him. Just when Leo seems to muster the courage to confess that he believes he has made a terrible mistake adopting Dylan, tragedy strikes; Leo never gets to make that confession to Tony. Ultimately, Leo has to decide on his own whether he can learn to be a father to Dylan, or if returning Dylan to the custody of social services is the best choice for all.

Using the story of the Red Star Line as a narrative vessel, this three-part documentary by Daniël Cattier and Fabio Wuytack explains why European emigrants left their homes behind for an uncertain future. It details their trips to Antwerp, their travel across the ocean, and their adjustments to their new lives in America. Theirs are intimate yet epic journeys in which past and present merge in the forging of new identities. The film, which is shot on location in Antwerp, New York, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine, uses ‘emotional archaeology’ to weave a richer narrative than could be conveyed through a string of facts and figures. And walking in the footsteps of Red Star Line passengers, surprising similarities are revealed to the experiences of modern immigrants.
