In 1957, a charismatic new black leader (Harry Belafonte) threatens to unseat British rule on the tropical island of Santa Marta. And soon, four scandalous love affairs intertwine to affect the political career of his wealthy rival (James Mason). Joan Collins, Stephen Boyd, Dorothy Dandridge and Joan Fontaine also star in this engaging film about scandal, politics and interracial marriage.
On a Caribbean island, a rich landowner's son, Maxwell Fleury, is fighting for political office against black labor leader David Boyeur. As if the contentious election weren't enough, there are plenty of scandals to go around: Boyeur has a secret white lover and Fleury's wife, Sylvia, is also having an affair. And then, of course, there's the small matter of a recently murdered aristocrat.

Tough to reviewThis movie features top rate stars and Harry Belafonte in his prime. The story revolves around the racism that was prevalent during that time period on an imaginary island in the Caribbean. It's good with a few unexpected plot twists but the real star of this movie is the gorgeous cinematography! The CinemaScope transfer is very good and presented in the correct aspect ratio. Throughout the film, I kept finding myself in awe of the beautiful photography! In addition you get some great 1950s interior design sets. So overall, I think this film is well worth owning although younger viewers may find the plot hard to relate too..Score: 4/5
I love this movie!It’s, unfortunately, still relevant today. Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte in their prime. I loved the cinematography, plots and subplots. The twists that happen are surprising. I had to buy it for my collection. I’ll watch it over and over!.Score: 5/5
