Internationally acclaimed director Louis Malle has taken a taboo subject - child prostitution - and has created in Pretty Baby a film of humanity and beauty. E.J. Bellocq (Keith Carradine) is a photographer obsessed with the prostitutes in New Orleans' red-light district. Violet (12-year-old Brooke Shields), a young girl in 1917, bewitches Carradine with her curiosity and naive coquettishness. Malle's level-headed treatment of this controversial theme and exceptional performances by the entire cast (especially Susan Sarandon as Violet's prostitute mother) makes Pretty Baby a must-see for all serious film fans.
Hattie, a New Orleans prostitute, meets a photographer named Bellocq at her brothel one night and, after he photographs her, he befriends her 12-year-old daughter, Violet. When Violet is brought on as a working girl by her mother's madam and Hattie skips town to get married, Violet quickly loses her innocence and focuses on reuniting with Bellocq. But a life with Bellocq is compromised for Violet after her mother returns to town.

Brave and DreadfulThis movie is based off of real historical events that took place in Louisiana when prostitution was legal. This movie, in fact was banned and highly edited for other countries due to its content and display of a naked 12 year old Brooke Shields. This movie is disturbing due to, what I believe, is a raw and real perspective of people in this time. What continues to haunt me, and should naturally haunt anyone viewing this, is what it does to a child. With that said the movie doesn’t parade itself as regularly harsh even though every corner of it can cut you. People laugh in this movie, they make light of their situation, but…as we end the film I am left with dread for the young girl who you presume could have a happy ending. But I doubt it will be so simple for her. For me this movie is more so educational. The fashion, architecture, and culture of this time period is so beautifully captured. The content is painful yet perfectly executed to make one think honestly about the industry that still exists today..Score: 4/5

Brooke Shields is amazing!This is really a classic movie, yet still controversial because of the topics of child nudity and child prostitution which is an underlying theme of the movie. Yes, 12-year-old Brooke Shields is shown full frontal, completely nude in the movie, but it is tastefully done. Shields' acting is incredible given her age. And Susan Sarandon and Keith Carradine give fantastic performances. This is an historical period piece that is very well-written and performed..Score: 5/5
