Inspired by the original 1925 silent version, this lavish Technicolor production remains one of the most unforgettable adaptations ever to be filmed.
A series of terrifying accidents and brutal murders leave a bloody trail into the subterranean caverns of an Opera house. Below the theatre stalks a man raised by creatures of the underworld.

The movie with more Opera and less PhantomThis is a very well regarded movie of the classic era of horror, and rightly deserved. Claude Rains is phenomenal as an aging musician who, thanks to an accident, becomes the warped composer known as the Phantom. However, the movie does have flaws, mainly due to the musical numbers that take up 1/3rd of the movie. The phantom doesn't even show himself until the end of the second act and his whole relationship with Christine is rushed into the last 10 minutes of the film. Honestly if anyone else played the Phantom in this movie, the film would be a total bust, but Claude Rains brings just the right amount of charisma and pathos in order to make the movie passable. He's no Lon Chaney, but he's LEVELS above most of the phantoms in the movies made n the past 30 years..Score: 3/5
Surprisingly goodI walked into this movie with rather low expectations, but I was shocked at how decent it was. The soundtrack was great, and the characters were good. And once the phantom gets involved it gets really interesting..Score: 5/5
