Following the journeys of six modern-day pilgrims as they cope with blisters, exhaustion, and loneliness, “Walking the Camino” explores the universal themes of this physically challenging, spiritually nourishing, and profoundly enlightening journey. While each of the six pilgrims walks the Camino for different reasons and with varied backgrounds, they each experience personal triumphs over their own doubts and fears. There is no single right way to live life, nor is there a single right way to walk the Camino. “Walking the Camino” not only illustrates the importance that we must each follow our own path in life; it encourages and inspires us to do so wholeheartedly.
'A Walk to Within: The Camino de Santiago' tells the story of walking the ancient 500-mile pilgrimage across norther Spain known as 'The Camino de Santiago'. The documentary follows six strangers from incredibly diverse walks of life as they attempt to cross an entire country on foot with only a backpack, a pair of boots, and an open mind. Each pilgrim throws themselves heart-and-soul into their physical trek to Santiago de Compostela, and their personal journey to themselves. As you watch, you will learn the rich history of this honored tradition, as well as witness the Camino's remarkable ability to change lives and provide those who choose to walk its paths with a greater sense of self and spiritual knowledge.

Get Ready to be Moved! If you look at the stats of how many Americans have walked the Camino in the last several years, there is a distinct spike after “The Way” was released. I fully expect a similar spike now that “Walking the Camino” is widely available (in fact, I met someone when I walked the Camino last fall who was walking because of this film). It captures the beauty of the landscape and the diversity of pilgrim motivations, experiences, and interactions. I saw it before I walked the Camino, and enjoyed going back and watching it now that I have had the experience. AuthenticA wonderful documentary about the Camino and the journey of six different people. This movie shows you the highs and lows people experience on the Camino, as well as a brief history and the beautiful landscape of Northern Spain. An Excellent Introduction to the CaminoI have walked the Camino three times, and so when it was playing in Birmingham, AL at UAB, a friend told me about it because she knew I’d be interested. Lydia Smith, the director, was there, which was a huge blessing, because we were all treated to some behind-the-scenes information from her on the production, and what came through clearly - both in the film and in the Q&A session - was her love and passion for the Camino. She made this movie because walking the Camino changed HER life. The doc follows six “main” pilgrims, though others receive some treatment, and you could not find a better cross-section of WHO is walking the Camino. Men and women of all different ages, beliefs, and walks of life. What is especially impressive is that Smith, who has her own personal beliefs that became clear in talking to her at the viewing, does not favor one of the six over the other. Each pilgrim is unique and receives his or her own sympathetic treatment. Though the Catholic French mother had conflict with her atheist party animal brother, the movie itself does not influence the viewer to favor one over the other. Each person has her or his own reason for making the pilgrimage, but no one receives any flak or favoritism. The viewer will naturally identify with one of the six more than the others, but that is not Smith’s doing. She presents each pilgrim with both dignity and reality. The movie itself is beautiful. From the snowy tracks through the Pyrenees in late spring to the hot, sunny plateaus of the Meseta, every establishing shot presents the Camino at its “best” and “worst” and calls the viewer to realize that, like life, one must take the pleasant with the difficult, and that there is beauty even in the pit. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who has walked the Camino, or as an introduction to anyone who wants to walk it. To the common viewer, be warned - this movie will have you looking at train or plane tickets to Spain!.Score: 5/5

Outstanding documentary! The Camino de Santiago is something different to everyone who walks it. Pilgrims have been making this journey for a thousand years, but this hike across Spain has only started receiving "mainstream" attention since Emilio Estevez's movie "The Way." “The Way” is a good story, but THIS documentary is the real deal. "Walking the Camino" does what Emilio’s movie can’t do- it shows the true hardships of walking the Camino. It is a real, honest, first-hand account of this 500 mile pilgrimage across Spain. I had the good fortune to see this at a film festival in Indianapolis just one week after I returned from the Camino, and the emotions it brought back were almost overwhelming at times. It was amazing to see the beautiful scenery on the big screen, and immediately recognize the places I had walked (not to mention a few faces). Places I had just visited were suddenly larger than life, and I was reminded of the beauty that the pain in my body might have overshadowed from time to time. Whether you have walked the Camino, are considering walking the Camino, or are just interested in a beautifully made documentary about a human experience, you owe it to yourself to watch this movie. Director Lydia Smith has really put her heart into this project, and anyone who has been on the Camino de Santiago will agree that it captures the real essence of the journey. Friendships, hardships, mental and physical challenges, pain, and the glory at the end. Walking the Camino is a life-changing experience, and Lydia has captured so much of it in her film... Please watch it, and enjoy it! Hopefully it will inspire you to walk the Camino, too! Buen camino!.Score: 5/5
