The first season of the primetime soap begins with oil tycoon Blake Carrington marrying his former secretary, Krystle. Krystle's former lover, Matthew, returns to town and causes more problems when he tells Krystle that he's still in love with her. Blake's daughter Fallon does not support his marriage, and chooses to marry childhood friend Jeff Colby just for her father's benefit. Blake's estranged son, Steven, also returns and causes problems when his ex-lover, a man named Ted, comes to town as well. Despite having an affair with Matthew's wife, Claudia, it is the death of Ted at the hands of his father that lands Blake on trial for murder. The season ends with the arrival of a mystery, surprise witness called by the prosecution.

While Fallon gives birth to a son, Krystle suffers a miscarriage after falling off a horse. A love triangle forms when Fallon falls for Nick but he has feelings for Krystle. The primetime soap's third season picks up where season two ended, with Krystle finding Blake in the mountains and helping him get to a hospital. An investigation is also started to find Little Blake. While Little Blake is eventually found, a man named Adam finds out that he was also kidnapped as a child and is actually a Carrington. Krystle's past comes back to haunt her as well when Alexis meets her first husband, Mark. Meanwhile, Joseph's daughter, Kirby, comes to live with the Carringtons and is later hired as a nanny for Little Blake. Alexis and Blake travel to Indonesia to search for Steven after an oil rig he was working on explodes there. Sammy Jo decides to move to New York to become a model and announces that she no longer wants to keep her son. In the season finale, Alexis traps Krystle in a cabin and offers her $1 million to leave Blake before somebody sets the cabin on fire with them inside.

Season four of the primetime soap begins right where the third left off, with Krystle and Alexis trapped in a burning cabin. Mark rescues them but becomes the one accused of arson and attempted murder until Alexis finds out that Joseph was the real culprit. Later, Fallon and Jeff uncover evidence suggesting that Adam poisoned Jeff, but Adam frames Alexis for it. Blake offers Krystle a public relations job before they get remarried and she later gets pregnant. Meanwhile, Steven and Blake fight over little Danny because Blake believes that a homosexual cannot provide a proper role model. As Alexis tries to ruin one of Blake's business deals, Kirby finds out the truth about her father's suicide and tries to kill Alexis. Alexis gets in more of a mess when Mark falls off her balcony and dies following a quarrel with her. In the season finale, Alexis is arrested for Mark's murder, Sammy Jo reveals the culprit behind Claudia's mystery calls and Fallon suffers a seizure and drives off as her wedding is about to begin.

When the family gets home, a lookalike woman named Rita poses as Krystle. Siblings run rampant as Alexis' sister Caress comes into the picture, as well as Blake's estranged brother Ben. Ben and Alexis eventually plot to strip Blake of his fortune. Steven's relationship with closeted Bart Fallmont hits a roadblock when Adam publicly reveals that Bart is gay. Season seven of the primetime soap continues right where the previous one left off: Alexis' life is spared as Krystle is able to restrain Blake's lethal temper, Amanda is rescued by Blake's chauffeur, Michael Culhane, and Claudia is claimed victim by the ravaging flames. After Blake recovers his wealth, he loses his memory following an oil rig explosion. While everyone thinks he is dead, Alexis makes him believe they are still married. Sammy Jo's marriage to Clay meanwhile crumbles and she sleeps with Steven. Krystina receives a heart transplant before she is kidnapped. In the season finale, Krystle is followed by a mysterious stranger, while Clay and Ben plan to leave Denver following the inconclusive blood test to determine Clay's real father. Blake and Alexis show their love for Adam by adopting him legally, hoping to quell any of his lingering doubts of their love. The Carrington mansion is sieged by intruders led by a familiar face from the past, looking for Krystle.

The ninth and final season of the primetime soap begins as Alexis is comforted by Dex's solace and friendship and the two renew their passionate love for each other. Fallon slips out of Jeff's room after Sammy Jo shows up unexpectedly to accept his marriage offer. Blake is devastated by his fear that Krystle's disappearance at the end of season eight may by a severe mental disorder. Krystle has a serious brain tumor and has a risky surgery in Switzerland that leaves her in a coma. Meanwhile, a murder and secret the ties together the Carrington, Colby, and Dexter is uncovered, causing Alexis and Sable to square off over business and then over Dex. In the series finale, Alexis threatens to sue Blake for half of a plundered Nazi treasure unless Sable withdraws her lawsuit against Colbyco. Sable agrees and Krystina leads Fallon to the treasure, and they are followed by Dennis Grimes. Blake and Handler face each other in a shoot out, while Dex and Adam square off on each other. Dex is hurled into Alexis and Sable, sending all three over a rail, crashing down on the landing below.

The primetime soap's eighth season picks up right where season seven ended. Matthew Blaisdel threatens to Kill Blake to insure Krystle's cooperation, Alexis is saved from certain death by a mysterious and handsome stranger, Sean Rowan, Dana and Adam fly off on their honeymoon and Jeff finds Fallon's unconscious body abandoned in the desert. As the season progresses, their marriage begins to once again fall apart. They are not the only couple who experience trouble: Steven and Sammy Jo don't have a very long reconciliation, while the desire for children destroys Adam and Dana's marriage. Alexis marries Sean, unaware that he is Joseph's son and Kirby's brother who is out for revenge. In the action-packed season finale, Sean takes Leslie's baby and holds her captive. Finding the location of the call through a wire tap, Adam and Steven hurry to the desolate mountain cabin. They find Leslie badly beaten, but Sean has already taken off with the baby. Chasing after him, Adam and Steven find him and get back the baby, but not before Sean is able to escape. Grappling with all the uncertainty in his life and Sammy Jo's current love affair with Jeff, Steven decides to leave Denver. Meanwhile, concerned about Krystle's sudden headaches, Blake places a call to her doctor. Returning to the Carrington mansion, he finds their room a total mess, and Krystle gone.

The primetime soap's fifth season picks up where season four left off: Fallon vanishes following a traffic accident and Dex and Steven bail Alexis out of jail. Eventually Alexis is exonerated before her secret daughter Amanda comes to town and learns that Blake is her father. After Sammy Jo is ordered to leave the mansion, she kidnaps her own son. Later, she finds out that she is the heiress to a huge fortune. Steven meanwhile marries Claudia but ends up leaving her for a man. At the end of the season, Fallon returns with amnesia while the rest of the family travels to Europe for Amanda's wedding to Prince Michael of Moldavia. In one of the most famous cliff hangers of the series, the season finale finds Dex being kidnapped by Yuri and his gang as Amanda and Michael recite their wedding vows. Dex breaks free from his captors and heads for the chapel, where terrorists have opened fire on the entire wedding party.
