One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep ageing - they get hurt and sick - but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking “What is Torchwood?" he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.
Captain Jack Harkness is a man from the 51st century trapped in the past who leads the last remnants of the Torchwood Institute, a top secret British agency outside the government whose job it is to investigate alien goings on in the world, act in mankind's best interest, and, if needed, be the Earth's last line of defense.

Not what I hoped it would beThis was not Torchwood. It could have been but it missed the mark. The idea was inspiered but the plot development and story telling were slow ploding and just made a good idea of a story boring and tedious. A hole in the ground.Spoiler alert! The big bad baddie? Not an alien. It's not even a living thing. I don't know what it was, because it made no sense. You thought "Cyberwoman" was bad back in season one? This is worse. And it's a whole Serial! It barely even mentions anything from the prior seasons. Remember how Children of Earth ended with Jack running away on a passing alien ship because of what he did? Yeah, that is totally not brought up here, or if it is, it's so quickly glanced over that I missed it. So we start out with the entire world becoming immortal. No one on earth can die, no matter what happens to them. The same, however, cannot be said for Captain Jack, who has suddenly found himself mortal once again! This sounds like a great premise, doesn't it? Sadly, it is handled in a way that makes the entire serial so boring and uneventful, that It made me want to watch "Of Love and Monsters" instead. It's painful, it's dull, and it's nothing I would ever recommend. My opinion? Pretend the series ended at "Children of Earth". At least that one was good..Score: 1/5

Not Bad, But Not Torchwood's Best MomentThe long-awaited Miracle Day is intriguing at times but not nearly as good as Children of the Earth, which was finely written, well acted, and at times genuinely frightening. By contrast, the performances and writing are very uneven here (even Bill Pullman doesn’t seem to know what to do with his surprisingly tepid character) and as of the end of episode six John Barrowman’s Captain Jack has had less to do and say than the new, one-note character, Rex Matheson. As I said, the acting is uneven (especially amongst the Americans) and at times distractingly so. Witness a recent two-show arc (Episodes 5 and 6) with some highly erratic performances — for admittedly weak and erratic characters — involving an insane camp director and his weak-kneed US army sidekick, a character who seems to be straight out of Gomer Pyle. Moreover, as one other iTunes reviewer noted, the nonstop incidental music is godawful and intrusive, especially in those moments when Bill Pullman’s character is speechifying. Torchwood has always been a much more serious show than the one it spun off of, Doctor Who. Undoubtably, it has reached the point where the show-runners regret being tethered to that great science fiction franchise, as they clearly want to take things in a very different direction, and write about a world where the wizard in the blue box isn’t just going to pop in, wave his magic screwdriver, and fix everything. By the time we get to Miracle Day, it seems incredible that the Torchwood team (and the people of planet Earth generally) inhabit a world that has in the past six or seven years been invaded by Daleks, Cybermen, and Sontarians, and once was transported whole across the universe. Even the events of Children of Earth aren't mentioned or are barely alluded to. There is an intriguing mystery here, though, and undeniably this serves, too, as a cautionary tale for things that are to come as an aging population in the West claims greater and greater health care resources. I just wish that it had been better in the execution..Score: 3/5

If you love Torchwood, let Children of Earth be the last episodes you watchChildren of Earth was great. Brilliantly written. Miracle Day is a complete train wreck. It starts with a great premise but I think it was meant to be a two part movie and not a 10 part miniseries because they run out of plot before they're even halfway through and by episode four you're wishing it would just end. There are many great actors in this but they end up with nothing to do. It also feels like some kind of Torchwood USA spinoff that none of the American actors really want to do. In the end, which is a sad pathetic "oh that's all it was?" ending, you WILL regret having watched this, more than the ending to Lost or BSG (if you hated one or the other or both) and it will leave a permanent taint on the entire series before it if you do watch. You have been warned..Score: 1/5
Don't bother with thisI wouldn't bother with this if I were you. Torchwood used to be about aliens and crazy happenings, like a more adult-themed Doctor Who than anything else. Torchwood has never been hugely mature with its presentation, but Miracle Day's call of maturity is simply violence. Not even creative, well staged, realistic, or with poetic irony, just plain graphic violence. In addition, numerous character roles have been tailored to fit the story better. The one-liners are cheesy and bland, and there is very little strength in the plot. Even if you have the ability to suspend your disbelief, there comes a point where it no longer is reasonable to expect your audience to take you in any way shape or form as anything but a satire of your own genre. Overall, I'd recommend this series to you if you thought Torchwood was too “philosophical” and you wished it had more senseless violence. The above aside, there are a few episodes that were well done. But, the majority of the series plays out like a fan-fiction.
