Vapid, boringAside from its beautiful imagery, cinematography and captivating (if not derivative) style, this movie is incredibly boring and empty. The "acting" if you even want to call it that, is so robotic and awkward that at times I had to fight the urge to turn it off. There is no story. There are no characters to care about. If there is a deeper message, I'm not quite sure what it's supposed to be. Aesthetically, I guess I can see how some might enjoy this, but I found it an insulting waste of time..Score: 2/5

A Tour de BadWow! Been a while since I've seen something this directionless. How many scenes can you have in a movie that last 10 minutes more than the 2 minutes that were necessary? How many scenes where people just stare into space with that "who am I?" look? This movie has more than you'll need in a lifetime. Toss in a couple of totally meaningless scenes and it's ready to serve. Only credit I can give is for pretty cinematography..Score: 2/5
Beautiful Waste of TimeThe film is basically a remake of Black Swan. The directors visual flare is here but the movie is a complete downgrading the previous success of Drive. It's stupid, gross, uninteresting and pretentious-don't waste your time.Score: 1/5
Amazing imagery, exotic and extremely thrillingThis is without a doubt one of the best movies I've ever seen. The imagery is jaw-dropping. -- I can usually figure out where a movie is heading story wise, but this keeps you in the dark. The best of all, it's so thrilling and just fun in a bizarre way. Visually stunningAside from the amazing cinematography and lighting, this film is much more a symbolic story than that of a narrative one, hence why there isn't really a plot. That said however, The Neon Demon was unlike anything I've ever seen before, and contained some of the most controversial and thought provoking topics that's I've ever witnessed..Score: 4/5
Ultimately a let downI really wanted to like this movie and thought the visuals and soundtrack were excellent. A genuine feast for the eyes and ears. However, I found it ultimately boring and unsatisfying. I expected something more from Refn and it wasn't there....at least for me. At times it grabbed me then let me go. I will watch it again to see if a second exposure will help me. If it does, I will update this review. Darn good visuals and music..Score: 3/5
I don't want to be sexist, but...Women are into some REALLY weird siht nowadays. I mean Jena Malone is easily the most beautiful woman in this film but seeing what she has to do to take home a pay cheque really makes me wonder if Hollywood is all it is cracked up to be. Starting off, I thought being covered in blue paint was pretty gross. By the end, I was staring in the mirror wondering what my soul looked like after sitting through all of this 666 shenanigans..Score: 1/5
Even for a fan of surrealist cinema, this was garbage. But why 2 starsBeing a fan of movies, especially experimental and surrealist ones, I've come to enjoy the works of David Lynch, Jodorowsky, even John Waters. So with the filmographies of those directors under my belt, I should have been ready for something like THE NEON DEMON. I saw this in the theater this past summer, which is where it really should be seen. It sounds like I didn't hate it all that much. I certainly did at first because I thought it didin't deserve to be as strange and f-ed up as it was. Now after I had time to digest it, the film got under my skin in a way I resented and that was particularly the point. It's cold color palette and dreamy cinematography makes this one a cut above other horror-type fair...and I use the term 'horror' very loosely here. It's a horror film, per se but it's dark, cynical tone lends itself well to satire. And I believe that was Refn's goal with this film. Elle Fanning's character is as empty and soulless as all the others around her. Except for one of the woman, whose character name escapes me but she was the one I was most "routing" for. Though the plot....there's a plot....seems nearly throw-away, it doesn't matter when all the art during the first third of the film is so aces, that any initial hatred I may feel for this film gets stripped away. I don't want to get into spoilers with this film. The fashion world is just as soulless and devoid of feeling as one can imagine. Whether you want to or not it makes you think about how superfically the world views beauty in general and women in particular. The male gaze objectifies the most beautiful women and discards those that have "reached their freshness date". The reaction one of the girls when she's rejected for a job was just utterly sad. You just felt as crushed as she did. Couple of things of note based on both my initial impression and the one I had after viewing it a second time: 1)The sound and visual design of the film is top-notch. I love the way both the music on the soundtrack and lighting effects that were used during the scene where Elle Fanning meets the "Neon Demon" 2) The unintentional (or intentional) humor in the really dumb dialogue will raise the film to the level of cult/midnight show status. NEON DEMON does for modeling what SHOWGIRLS does for Las Vegas 'show girls'. Well, I hated SHOWGIRLS but I sort of liked THE NEON DEMON for similar reasons. 3) It's overall ridiculousness is part of the film's charm. And the film is completely ridiculous. 4) Refn's statement about the superficiality of the fashion industry runs back on itself where in the opening credits, the title card is even "branded" with his initials. Pretentious? Yep! And he hopes the audience notices what he did and smiles at his cleverness. The monogram looks vaguely similar in font as the Yves Saint-Laurant one for every line that guy owns. :) So it's every aspect of the superficiality of the fashion industry Refn is satrizing, including the branding. :D There are some notes I came away with this time. Overall, this really isn't a bad film. It's not one worthy to be Oscar Bait, necessarily. But it's worth checking out. It's sleazy, gross, crass and humorous (especially the dialogue). It's one to experience on the big screen if you happen to get a chance. I hasn't made any of my lists but I think I could put it with other surrealist films I liked like Santa Sangre, Viva le Meurte..Score: 3/5
