8.3 star

The senior members of the White House staff are summoned to the office early in the morning to handle difficult situations: Hundreds of Cubans are on their way across the Atlantic Ocean in search of freedom; and klutzy President of the United States Josiah Bartlet accidentally sprained his ankle riding a bicycle into a tree. Some members of the staff experience crises of their own. Sam discovers the law student he slept with last night, Laurie, also works as a high-priced call girl. Josh's former lover and fellow campaign worker, Madeline "Mandy" Hampton, now dates and works for a senator who might vie for the office of President. Also, a rumor persists that Josh will be terminated because of a remark he made on a TV show. The comment offends the Christian fundamentalists and upsets Reverend Al Caldwell, an influential religious leader and necessary Presidential ally..

Best series ever filmed!West Wing is the gold standard. You won't find a better series anywhere (except maybe the Duchess of Duke Street, Prime Suspect & a couple of other BBC Masterpiece Theater series). Funny thing is, when it was running, I never watched it. My husband would beg me to watch it with him, but I blew it off after a few minutes, explaining that I thought the dialogue was affected--like David Mamet dialogue. My husband's health troubles worsened and he died a few years ago. I was despondent, of course. Because I couldn't concentrate well enough to read, I began watching a ton of television and because of him, I started watching West Wing around the time they were airing the episodes of the terrorists & Bartlett's daughter. Fabulous!!!I was hooked. These series are worth the money and I've rented all of them, grateful that I don't have to wait until next week or wade through 15 minutes of commercials. Make sure you watch the episode when CJ performs The Joker? It's not the joker--it's a vocal jazz piece by Ronnie Jordan, and I can't remember the title. Bartlett reminds me of my husband to a t. Brilliant show but way to expensive! This show had a unique balance of creativity and realism. A number of the episodes reflected the problems faced in the world today and some of the solutions presented were both brilliant and believable. Moreover, the creators of the show seem to have done their homework. Being an Indian, i was a bit irked by the "Lord John Marbury" episode where India is potrayed as the aggressor, but the solutions presented, and in particular recognition of the problem between India and Pakistan (a problem of above all, religion; Indian muslim population not withstanding) won my heart. I have seem almost all the episodes of the seven seasons and would highly recommend this to anyone who likes a good drama. Glad to see Eddie Olmos return to the silver screen.
