"A portrait of a quintessential New York artist" (The New York Times) and "irascibly entertaining" (Village Voice), DON'T BLINK is a documentary about Robert Frank, the legendary photographer and filmmaker behind the seminal book "The Americans" and landmark films like PULL MY DAISY (with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg) and C***SUCKER BLUES (with the Rolling Stones). Directed by his longtime editor Laura Israel, the film is an exuberant and fascinating journey into the images and words of an iconoclastic artist, a Swiss-born man who reinvented himself the American way, and is still standing on ground of his own making at the age of 90. The soundtrack features Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, White Stripes, Yo La Tengo, Tom Waits, and more.

Don't Blink - Robert Frank Film Synopsis

The life and work of Robert Frank—as a photographer and a filmmaker—are so intertwined that they're one in the same, and the vast amount of territory he's covered, from The Americans in 1958 up to the present, is intimately registered in his now-formidable body of artistic gestures. From the early '90s on, Frank has been making his films and videos with the brilliant editor Laura Israel, who has helped him to keep things homemade and preserve the illuminating spark of first contact between camera and people/places. Don't Blink is Israel's like-minded portrait of her friend and collaborator, a lively rummage sale of images and sounds and recollected passages and unfathomable losses and friendships that leaves us a fast and fleeting imprint of the life of the Swiss-born man who reinvented himself the American way, and is still standing on ground of his own making at the age of 90.

Loved it!I loved this film! I am an enormous Robert Frank fan so it was a real treat to watch. I've actually seen it three times in theaters, twice to NYC and once in Pennsylvania where I got to meet Laura Israel after a Q&A. A great film about a great artist! And the soundtrack is amazing too!.Score: 5/5

You'll buy it anywayIf you (like myself) love Frank's work, just buy this and you will enjoy it. However I felt the film could have been better. It was not an insightful, interview based documentary that I would have expected but more of a head on trip into his idiosyncrasies. As a BFA graduate I will say this felt like the documentary one of my older beatnik type professors would make. I found it to hold too long on the quirkiness of Frank now and also almost passed over his still photography showing a ton of his silent movies in relation to his still photography. I wished for more and it never delivered for me. As a photographer and fan of his work I still enjoyed it but found the filmmakers approach dared, heavy handed and obnoxious. Also the soundtrack made me want to mute the film several times..Score: 3/5

A great film about a true photographic master.A great look inside the life and work of the 20th Century's most important photographer. Frank is somewhat elusive, so this is a golden opportunity to see the man up close and personal. I must also note, the soundtrack is killer..Score: 5/5

Using the story of the Red Star Line as a narrative vessel, this three-part documentary by Daniël Cattier and Fabio Wuytack explains why European emigrants left their homes behind for an uncertain future. It details their trips to Antwerp, their travel across the ocean, and their adjustments to their new lives in America. Theirs are intimate yet epic journeys in which past and present merge in the forging of new identities. The film, which is shot on location in Antwerp, New York, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine, uses ‘emotional archaeology’ to weave a richer narrative than could be conveyed through a string of facts and figures. And walking in the footsteps of Red Star Line passengers, surprising similarities are revealed to the experiences of modern immigrants.
