This is the story of USSR's first nuclear ballistic submarine, which suffered a malfunction in its nuclear reactor on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic in 1961. The submarine's crew, led by the unyielding Captain Alexei Vostrikov, races against time to prevent a Chernobyl-like nuclear disaster which threatens not only the lives of his crew, but has the potential to ignite a world war between the super powers.

Il natante ha qualche problema di costruzione e l'equipaggio non è dei più preparati. È per questo che il timone viene affidato a un comandante inviato da Mosca (Ford) che fa passare al ruolo di comandante in seconda il precedente responsabile (Neeson). I due hanno diverse concezioni del dovere e il conflitto esplode quando si verifica una perdita nel nucleo radioattivo che fa da propulsore al mezzo.

Český Dramatický příběh na motivy skutečných událostí. Rok 1961, Severní Atlantik. První sovětská jaderná ponorka s označením K-19 se vydala na svoji první ostrou plavbu. Ještě před vypuštěním na otevřené moře si kvůli sérii nešťastných nehod vysloužila přezdívku výrobce vdov. Už zanedlouho po vyplutí tato přezdívka získá další opodstatnění, protože vedená dvěma veliteli-rivaly, se ponorka opět dostane do velkých problémů. V lepším případě jen rozšíří dlouhou sérii velkých neštěstí 20. století, v tom horším se může stát příčinou nukleární exploze, která přivede obě supervelmoci studené války ke zničujícímu nukleárnímu konfliktu. Osud světa nyní leží v rukách vystrašených námořníků a bude záležet na schopnostech obou velitelů, zda překonají osobní neshody tváří v tvář hrozící katastrofě.

Hrvatski Godine 1961. dvije svjetske supersile SAD i SSSR vode sve žešću utrku u naoružanju. SAD raspolaže i nuklearnim podmornicama u čijem su dometu Moskva i Lenjingrad. Kako bi uspostavio ravnotežu, sovjetski vojno-politički vrh ubrzano priprema porinuće vlastite nuklearne podmornice, K-19. No, plovilo u tehničkom smislu još uvijek nije spremno na što upozorava zapovjednik podmornice, kapetan Mihail Polenin (L. Neeson). Zanemarivši njegova upozorenja, vojni vrh na čelu s maršalom Zelencovom (J. Ackland) postavlja novog zapovjednika podmornice Alekseja Vostrikova (H. Ford), a Polenin mu je zamjenik. Premda se u početku čini da je Polenin pretjerao s upozorenjima, problemi s reaktorom dovedu posadu u situaciju da o njihovoj sposobnosti ovisi svjetski mir.
