After All These Years Nia DeliversI’ve been a fan of the My Big Fat Greek Wedding films since the very first movie. Nia Varsalos has such a vibrant, warm, and unique screen presence. Truly one of a kind. Over the years, the MBFGW community has consistently asked for a film to take place in Greece. And finally, here we are! My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 feels like the bow on a beautiful series that has been decades in the making. Toula finds herself in Greece with her family on a mission to give her late father's notebook to his friends. What happens during this trip can in my opinion only be described as off the rails and in a good way! I really enjoyed this movie. As an American Italian with an immigrant family that mirrors the Portocolous family, this movie hit close to home. Seeing Toula's mother go through dementia reminded me of my own grandmother suffering from the same problem. Seeing Toula's family have midlife crisises and figuring out their own identity is very relatable. And more importantly, seeing the appreciation of culture and beauty of other places is a humbling experience. I think a lot of people might struggle to like this film if they never traveled abroad before and have actually seen small villages or have seen European places like this. It truly is a different world and the jokes that might seem cheesy on screen are actually very accurate. I also think that some people might not be able to relate to having a large family, which is a shame but a sad reality. I think that the film does a great job at making Toula's family feel like your family nonetheless. There are some critiques that I want to address about the film: 1. Aristotle should've been written differently. At the beginning of the movie, it's a little unclear who he is to Paris. Aristotle and Nick talk about Aristotle being a nerd. But then we see Aristotle being a total jock, a dancer, very extroverted, and just the complete opposite of a nerd. If you are going to give someone a specific personality, try to keep it consistent at least. It would've been nice to see Aristotle be a little less extroverted and wild and a little more quiet and dorky. I think it would've helped with his character development as well because he is very intelligent by the way the character is portrayed. I also didn't like that he screamed at Victory to take down her banner. It felt so mean. Like dude, chill out and stop bullying her about her family reunion. I don't know, Aristotle just rubbed me the wrong way and I don't think he deserved a lot of camera time if at all. 2. Angelo and Nikki are amazing. Nia did a great job writing them as the heroes in the end. If we get the opportunity to see a spin off or a sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I would love the 4th film to focus on Angelo getting engaged and seeing a repeat of the first movie all over again with Angelo struggling to be a gay man getting married while being Greek Orthodox. Or perhaps having Angelo getting married to an Italian man and you have culture clash of Greeks vs Italians. I think a storyline like that could do very well and it could be a direct connection to the first movie's tension as well and wrap things up in a modern way. Having Angelo getting married could also be the series first gay wedding and it could be a great opportunity to show acceptance of LGBT people in big Italian and Greek families. 3. Paris and her college storyline was a nice addition to the story and I do think it's great to show that college is tough. College isn't for everyone and it is a very tough place to be, especially if you aren't serious about what degree you want. It's also a lot of money. Seeing Paris struggling with her degree on screen was relatable and I loved seeing these deeper versions of her. If I could change anything, it would be to have the focus be less on Aristotle and her, and instead on Paris learning to appreciate her mom and dad more and maybe even consider moving back to Chicago to live at home while she finishes her degree. 4. Nick, Toula's brother, was really funny. I liked that he was the comic relief. I think the shaving jokes did get a little too worn out though. Nick in previous films was an artist. He redrew the menu for his dad. Maybe they could've given him a small opportunity to decorate or create a village memorial or a village art piece. I just think that Nick being creative could've played a role somehow in the film 5. Theia was really funny but honestly, I don't remember her. She was a background character in the first two films. I think maybe doing some sort of recap of who she is would've helped through dialogue or something. Overall, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is a great film. It has so much love, passion, and charm put into it. We've been asking Nia to write and make a 3rd film for years and she delivered. Thank you Nia for this beautiful film. It makes me want to visit Greece one day. Also Nia if you are reading this, please consider making a 4th film about Angelo getting engaged to his boyfriend to get married and have the 4th film be about a gay Greek wedding. I think it would be so good and it could be such an interesting story to tell..Score: 5/5
