Din păcate, curând află că există o mare diferență între luptătorul ideal și experiența războiului, că liniile morale care îi fuseseră induse de părinți și în care crezuse cu atâta tărie sunt de fapt inexistente în realitatea dură a războiului. Kovic este întâi derutat, apoi profund deziluzionat, descoperind că mulți dintre camarazii săi nu sunt cu nimic superiori inamicilor.
