It's gotta alright transformation sequence, thoughThis movie came out when I was a kid and had the absolute BEST poster for luring fifth-graders into bad horror flicks. It was a silhouette of this BEAST of some sort and the print inside the silhouette was something along the lines of 'If you can sit through the last 30 minutes of this movie...yadayadayada." Man, I was definitely gonna see this one! Nothing really happened for the first 50 minutes or so, but once they got into the last third, my friend (I am pretty sure it wa Mookie) and I were hooked. The transformation sequence was soooo over the top, so 'gnarly', I can still picture some of it now in my mind. Of course, I watched it again years later on cable, and it wasn't nearly as good, even the transformation scene, but every time I see this movie, my eyes light up. It just takes me back to a time when the only monsters we needed to fear were onscreen. PS: Ronnie Cox was also in my favorite episode of 'Quincy, M.E.' playing a gifted young pianist stricken with Tourettes' Syndrome. Three stars for nostalgia; for its real merit, maybe two. It'd be good to gross out the kids, but by today's standards, it probably isn't that scary..Score: 3/5
Traumatized me as a child...I kid you not. I was eleven when this movie came out. A friend of mine and I thought it would be cool to sneak into this one after we'd finished watching Deathtrap. It happened to be nearing the end of the movie and when at the "spine" point of the transformation sequence, my friend and I ran out of the theatre - we just couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't bring myself to watch this movie for 10 years. Freaked me out. Of course, this type of gore is nothing nowadays. But at the time... wow. It's a B-movie. It's worth a peek..Score: 3/5
Um...Never seen it. iTunes trailer screamed "B-Movie!" to me. but, i'm the first to write a review! so, ha!.Score: 3/5
Redeeming moments...Although this is essentially an old B-monster movie, it does have its redeeming moments. The concept of the boy inheriting this curse from his father, who raped his mother while transformed. The connection between the boy (Michael) and the Cicadas, hatching from their skins once every 17 years. And just the idea that he transforms on the full moon, but not into a werewolf - Into some kind of weird, disturbing mutant... This all makes the film very unique and different. Everything else is pretty old fashioned and played straight and serous. Good writing. The score is good, though it seems like "stock monster movie score" from 50's Universal movies. The way the boy transforms gradually is cool, and builds suspense. The plot gets a bit muddled, with his father's spirit somehow coming through and taking him over, and how his father became cursed is also a bit muddled and confusing. The acting is very good for the most part, except for Paul Clemens who plays the young Michael. His acting is so false and over the top, plus he's a weird looking and out of shape guy... Overall, I did enjoy it. There's some cool, original monster stuff in there, with a creature that not only rips heads off, but rapes young women so that he may spread his monstrous seed. Cool!!! Fans of old school horror will like it. Anybody who liked "Jennifer's Body" need not waste your time....Score: 4/5
The Tagline Was...I remember when it was released as well, and it said the only thing more horrifying than the first 90mins of this film is the last 15...., well they ain't kidding, it was pretty horrifying, but if you like the 80's b-horror craze, (which really began with Friday the 13th, and included my bloody valentine, prom night, happy birthday to me, scanners, etc...), than you will enjoy this. You can probably rent it locally for 99 cents, and its worth that for the transformation scene. Watch it with a bunch of friends in the spirit of Mystery Science Theatre and you wont be disappointed !!!.Score: 2/5
Read the novel insteadThis movie is awful! Sure, it's a b-movie, and not a good one instead. This is based on a novel by Edward Levy. The book is OOP, but if you can find this, read it instead of watching this.Score: 1/5
