Set in the Los Angeles Police Department in April 1992, Dark Blue is a dramatic thriller that takes place just days before the acquittal of four white officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King and the subsequent L.A. riots. In this racially charged climate, the L.A.P.D's elite Special Investigations Squad (SIS) is assigned a high-profile quadruple homicide. As they work the case, veteran detective Eldon Perry (Kurt Russell), known for his tough street tactics and fiery temper, tutors SIS rookie Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman) in the grim realities of police intimidation.

Could have been betterThis movie could have been so much better. I don’t know who decided to score the movie like it was a 1990’s comedy. The move is super dark and at some of the most suspenseful parts you can here this cheesy electric piano beat in the background. I know that sounds like I’m being nit-picky, but it’s distracting. With all the great rap from the time this movie is based on they could have used, it just seems to diminish it. Which is a bummer because this is one of Kurt Russell’s best performances..Phouse81Score: 3/5
It's no Training DayI was excited to see Dark Blue because it was the one film written by David Ayer I had not seen and I'm a fan of his. He's had some good ones: U571, Training Day. SWAT was terrible but I forgave that.
Enter Dark Blue. It's a decent script with a decent story. The acting, however, is awful save almost entirely for Kurt Russell. This film could have been great with a better cast. The directing is nothing special and at one point during Russell's confession, the camera starts shaking as if someone ran into it.
The first 15-20 minutes of act 3 are really solid but that's hardly a consolation prize for the rest of the film. In summation, this film is possibly worth a rent but not a buy..Gray_WolvesScore: 2/5

Great Political ThrillerRussell turns in an astonishingly good performance as a savvy cop who knows how to survive just about anything that crooked politics deals him and his partner. His performance matches his roles in BREAKDOWN and THE THING. Ving Rhames is allowed the opportunity to play a God-fearing cop who will stand up and directly challenge the LA Police Force's business as usual approach to law enforcement. So often Rhames seems almost edited out of the movies he supposedly co-stars in because his acting ability is almost overwhelming (the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, for example).
