Wes Craven (The People Under the Stairs, Shocker) directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo. A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses. Based on the true life experiences of Wade Davis and filmed on location in Haiti, it's a frightening excursion into black magic and the supernatural.

Not what I expected, but...This is an excellent movie - great and engaging story, nicely carried out and translated into a movie. It's not a zombie movie in the typical sense, but offers much depth. Craven managed to keep the tension throughout the movie, not a moment of dullness. Overall, highly recommended (if I have to critize something, it'd be the cheesy-B-movie-looking cover!!).Score: 5/5

StereotypicalMan, they soiled Wade Davis' biography of his search for the 'Zombie Powder" of Hatian voodo. Actually, the powder was just the toxin inside a Fugu fish but in this movie, it's real Zombie powder. Plus, seriously, leave Hati alone for like two seconds, it's just a religion taught there. I mean come on, look at it this way, I make a movie about a dude who goes on a search for L. Ron Hubbard's dentures and on the way he encounters John Travolta Zombies and Tom Cruise robots, now you see what I mean, does that sound even remotely good. There's so many things wrong with that so if you wouldn't watch a movie like that, don't buy a movie like this..Score: 1/5

Pretty solid until the last 15 minutesI first saw the trailer for this thing way back in late 1987 at the age of 13, and it got under my skin in ways I can't describe. The movie came out the day before my birthday in February 1988. But, I didn't actually see it until 3 years later. It's pretty well known that Wade Davis, who authored the book of the same name, violently hates the film. Obviously, it was Craven'd quite a bit and has little in common with the book. However, there's a level of creepiness here that makes it stand out among most horror films. Anthropologist Dennis Alan (played by Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to investigate a drug said to be able to bring the dead back to life. In doing so, he manages to draw the ire of local authorities, who promptly turn his trip into a nightmare. I won't spoil anything else. I will say it goes way downhill once Dr. Allen enters the cave to confront Captain Peytraud of the Haitian paramilitary force. Up until then, I enjoyed it, and I can recommend this to anyone who enjoys horror without all the cheap scares..Score: 4/5
