A team of intrepid adventurers travels through the outer reaches of the galaxy, each week finding excitement and adventure on Galaxy Quest! Or at least that's the way it was in the mid-1970s, when brave if reckless Captain Peter Quincy Taggart, lovely Lieutenant Tawny Madison, and inscrutable alien Dr. Lazarus were the leaders of an interstellar law enforcement team on the TV series of that name. Twenty years later, the show is still in reruns, and Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver), and Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman) prop up their sagging careers by making appearances at sci-fi conventions, where they grudgingly shake hands and give autographs for the show's socially inept following. However, it turns out that nerdy sci-fi fans aren't the only ones watching: somewhere in another solar system, a group of alien rebels living under a regime of violence and repression have picked up broadcasts of Galaxy Quest, and they aren't aware that it's fiction. They travel to Earth and encounter the Galaxy Quest cast, who figure that they're just another bunch of guys who like to dress funny. However, they soon realize that they're being hired not for another autograph-signing session but for a real-life outer space rescue mission.

For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA protector - "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" (Tim Allen), "Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver) and "Dr.Lazarus" (Alan Rickman) - set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space...and then their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for "historical documents" and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.

Essence of parodyIn my opinion, this is one of the four best "Star Trek" movies next to "The Motion Picture," "Wrath of Khan" and "Master and Commander." It is the epitome of quality parody. Faithful and affectionate to the source material, aware of the audience and willing to ask questions the original characters should have. But most importantly the humor develops naturally from the absurdity of the situations. The "TV show" cast nail their roles, obviously relating to the plight of their real-life counterparts. While Tim Allen has the meatiest arc as a send-up of Shatner desperately trying to be Kirk, it's Alan Rickman as a three-way fusion of Nimoy/Spock / Dorn/Worf / Stewart/Picard that I felt was the most engaging, heroic and tragic. An actor of the Shakesperean tradition who's dream of making it big in Hollywood dead-ends with him being typecast in a genre role. Yet no matter how stupid he finds it, his professionalism and commitment will not allow him to escape. He knows he'll always be remembered for a ridiculous catchphrase and retarded makeup, yet still he dutifully dons it for even the most humiliating gig. Because. That's. His. Job. Fun Ride!Silly, predictable plot with not-so-stunning special effects. But the comedy and the drama come though strong and hit you at the exact moment it should; due to great editing. Awesome-tastic Movie!When I was a kid, not all that long ago I saw this movie on TV. When I finally found it on VHS at a flee market I bought it. Watched it 11 times that week! I have watched it at least once a month since I was 13. Super-Fantastic Movie! 6/5 stars! The cast and crew should be commended on such an accurate interpretation of the live of the stars that made Star Trek so popular in the 60s. It almost makes to wonder if it were to happen in real life, if they would make such a great parody of it or not?
