Journey into an explosion of sight, sound, song and superb storytelling as brilliantly conceived by animation innovator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, The Lord of the Rings, Wizards). From a turn-of-the-century immigrant vaudevillian to a rock superstar, "American Pop" is the story of four generations whose lives revolve around the beat of American popular music. Featuring a mind-blowing soundtrack bursting with the hit music of The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas & The Papas, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pat Benatar, Lou Reed, Bob Seger and more. Packed with energy, excitement, electricity and enthusiasm, Bashki's work is a ground-breaking, kaleidoscopic animated trip.
The history of American popular music runs parallel with the history of a Russian Jewish immigrant family, with each male descendant possessing different musical abilities.

Fantastic!!!!There has never been a movie like american pop and there never will be...director and writer, Ralph Bakshi has created his masterpiece and it is American pop. This story is a timeless classic about four generations of men who each had a chance at stardom but life got in the way. The technique he used to create this fascinating story is called "rotoscope" in which Mr. Bakshi filmed the entire movie in live action and then painstakingly transferred each frame to an animated cell. The result is a hand crafted work of art rivaled only by todays best computer animation. This unsung film gem is far better than his previous "Wizards" and "Lord of the Rings" projects, in that it's more than just a cool idea. It's great story telling with believable characters and it doesn't have the choppy, jumpy animation that the aformentioned films suffered from. The soundtrack is equally impressive. There's a great remake of the song "Somebody to love" by Marcy Levy which is far superior to the original version as well as classic rock tunes by Pat Benatar, Jimmie Hendrix, the Doors and the Sex pistols to mention a few. You'll love this film and remember it forever..Score: 5/5
Easily Top Ten For MeLoved this movie since I was a child, and as an adult it amazes me that it has never been made into a full-on, live-action film. Wonderful story, amazing soundtrack (featuring a rare Bob Seger piano version of Night Moves), great voice casting and rotoscoping. I can't say enough about this movie. Awesome, dare I say masterpieceI saw this movie in 1981 and was floored my it. Sure I understand the animation is not “state of the art” by todays standards but, the storyline here is remarkable and is intertwined in American History. It's almost "Forrest Gump" ish . Glad I found it on iTunes now there no excuse for me not seeing it again.Score: 5/5
Astounding Story TellingFrom the first time I saw this film I knew it was far and away Bakshi's best work. A wonderful telling of the American Story from a music point of view. The only part I disliked was the ending Bob Seeger tune, I felt there would've been so many other songs that could've been chosen instead. All in all an incredible tale of the blossoming of the American music scene..Score: 5/5

Definitely a MUST HAVE for the collectorAmazing embodiment of the EVOLUTION of Rock-n-Roll. Great story lines with-in each 'generation' that fantastically captures an electrifying distinct moods. Buy it, save it, watch when you're stoned… thats all I gotta say about that..Score: 5/5
Not buying into this one . . .Aside from the method of creating animation from real life scenes, I didn't enjoy the movie. The music selection was limited to a number of obscure tunes by a few great artists. Come on! How could Bakshi completely ignore Mowtown and the Funk Brothers? How could he ignore Disco? Well, okay, maybe not disco. Also, the sporadic use of real life shorts was distracting. I couldn't become immersed in the animation..Score: 2/5
AmazingGroundbreaking in every way, after seeing this I went and bought myself a harmonica just to learn some of these songs.Score: 5/5
