Kenneth Branagh ("Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "The Road to El Dorado") writes, directs and stars in this four-time Oscar-nominated classic Shakespeare saga about the melancholy Dane. With an all-star cast, including Oscar-nominee Kate Winslet ("Iris," "Titanic") and Oscar-winner Julie Christie ("Dragonheart," "Dr. Zhivago"), as well as appearances by Charlton Heston, John Gielgud, Jack Lemmon, Gerard Depardieu, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and many others. Branagh received an Oscar nomination for his outstanding screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter says "Branagh has boldly invigorated William Shakespeare's most celebrated play to a towering visual dimension that captures the tumultuous tragedy as no stage or filmic version has... Multiple Oscar nominations seem in order."
When Hamlet discovers his father’s deceased body, he finds himself pulled into a power struggle as his scheming uncle attempts to secure a monopoly on the Scandinavian rubber duck industry. Will Hamlet avenge his father? Will he become the king of rubber ducks? Does any of it really matter?

Finally! A Hamlet I watched all the way through!I read Hamlet in highschool and again in college and recall being impressed by the language, but like alot of school the focus was not on appreciating it, just on passing the test. Since then I have always had a mind to really engage with Shakespeare and Hamlet in particular, and to that end I tried to watch the one with Mel Gibson.... and couldn't follow it ... whispers and screaming and mutters and mumbles in an unfamiliar cadence...Ditto the Olivier movie.... This one however, this one I was able to understand what they were saying and was interested in it. Its interesting that they use 19th century costumes and bright colors and bright spaces. Other productions are always so overwhelmingly, unrelentingly, depressing, dark and gloomy. Hamlet is still "melancholy" but his gloom stands in contrast to the court which I always thought was kinda the point. So if, like me, you have tried to like Hamlet before and just couldn't do it, I recommend trying this one. And by the way Billy Crystal as the grave digger was a real treat and Charleton Heston was marvelous as an actor... not that there are any bad performances, but those stood out for me..Score: 5/5
Finally, the Whole Thing Done Right!Branagh's Hamlet was easily the best film of 1996! The performances are absolutely spot on, especially Branagh, Derek Jacoby, Julie Christie and Kate Winslet, who all deserved awards! The adaptation is superb and finally COMPLETE! This film is an riveting, exciting and visceral interpretation that moves so quickly it seems much shorter than its four hour running time! Genius.Branagh is a genius. This is the most vibrant, sexy, awesome, grand and visually stunning adaptations of Hamlet I've ever seen. Kudos to Branagh for using the full text and more kudos for moving the time period up as well, allowing for more colour and all the pomp and circumstance the piece requires. The musical score is tangibly grand, the cast is amazing and gives deep, nuanced and explosive performances, especially Branagh himself. Horrible. This film is a mess.I mean, the film is kind of fun in a burlesque way, perhaps. As in, you could use it to play a drinking game (take a drink every time someone speaks in an urgent whisper). But it takes itself altogether far too seriously. The acting is dreadful, melodramatic, and worst of all, the funny bits are completely missed. Claudius, for example, is warm and sympathetic where he should be outrageous. Although I am sure this was nothing like Shakespeare's vision, I can't say he wouldn't like it. At least parts of it. After all, he wrote the script verbatim. But even Shakespeare himself cut mercilessly. I really think he would look at it as a missed opportunity. Or a whole series of missed opportunities. Everywhere this film could have been really cool, Branagh mucked it up with overbearing music, needless and distracting "action", and visually superfluous set pieces that repeat like a Flintstones cartoon.
