Innovative director Spike Jonze collaborates with celebrated author Maurice Sendak to bring one of the most beloved books of all time to the big screen in "Where the Wild Things Are," a classic story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in. The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.
Max imagines running away from his mom and sailing to a far-off land where large talking beasts—Ira, Carol, Douglas, the Bull, Judith and Alexander—crown him as their king, play rumpus, build forts and discover secret hideaways.

I love thisI love this movie. As a teen, it perfectly captures the fear of growing up, while at the same time addressing bad relationships with parents and siblings. This movie still brings tears to my eyes as Max realizes that growing up is okay and that he needs to start to let go of some of his childhood. It also hits me hard as the kid and his mom have a good and bad relationship similar to me and my mom. It’s sad but it’s supposed to be sad. It’s for the people who grew up reading this book. It’s not necessarily for kids, and yet people complain about it being to dark. I never really read the book, and I still loved this movie. It’s so touching and sad, but in the end it’s happy and just makes you cry your eyes out. I would definitely say this is worth 3.99 to rent. And I would definitely recommend you watch it (P.S, sorry if I spoiled anything!!!).Score: 5/5

I Absolutely Loved ItOk so if you've read the book you understand the "Wild Things." and the island were all just his imagination. The transition was Max running away from the neglect and personal issues. As a youth years ago I can say I sadly endured the same. I was a loner, which is probably why this film got my choked up. A Must See Movie!!!!!Where the Wild Things Are is a movie that can not be missed! This has to be one of the best Children Books turned into a movie. This is one of the most joyful and emotional movies ever to be made for everyone all ages. And by I saying this movie is emotional is that it is very touching to the heart and I actually saw grown teen boys and men crying in this movie. So if you feel like not wanting to see this movie, that is a mistake by you! So don't wait til' it's gone. Buy it right now!!!.Score: 5/5

Probably "cool" if you're a soft, entitled suburbaniteVisually striking at times and technically well-made, but Jonze and crew have unfortunately misappropriated this amazing, magical kids classic to comment on the harsh reality of abusive relationships and dysfunctional families. Which all might seem "really cool and edgy" if you've lived a soft, entitled suburban life, but if you're rather looking for an evening of escape, you won't find it here. Definitely NOT for kids. I only hope that some years from now, after the bad taste of this one fades, someone with a sense of magic and fun will take another crack at Wild Things..Score: 2/5

Emotional but great adaptionThis movie is very confusing. It is not really made for kids but for adults who read the book as a kid. Kids will like it. I will admit that I have seen many emotional films (The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan) but this movie breaks me down and makes me cry every time. Spike Jonez really captured Max's feelings scared about the world will end, financial problems, lonely, anger, misunderstood. It is kind of dark at times like (spoiler, Carol rips off another monster's arm) The snow fort attack scene was very intense. I recommend it for eight up because of its dark nature but it is a well thought movie that is a good family movie but younger kids may be scared of this movie. I love it but I haven't watched it for three years since I was 11 because it makes me cry. By the way Arcade Fire's Wake up was perfect for the movie..Score: 5/5

FantasticI was wondering how you could turn a short book into a almost 2hr movie. They did a great job. The characters were superb, special effects virtually perfect and my 8 and 10 year old laughed throughout. A few tense moments, but they were short and not really that scary. Perfect This movie was exactly what it should have been. I agree It isn't for little children, but thats because it was made for the people who grew up with the story. Needs an Open Mind. This movie requires an open mind. If you're looking for a comforting Disney classic of sorts, you're not going to find it here. I find you're outlook on the movie may actually depend on your mood. You may be touched by some of the more dramatic, intense moments, or you might just burst out laughing! All the characters are very different from the norm and you may find it difficult to let these large, hairy beasts into your heart. I could not find a single flaw in the entire movie's visuals, but found them breathtaking. The scenery alone sells this one. Soundtrack is interesting and fits in like two puzzle pieces; the movie would not be the same without it's unique sound. Very artistic and makes of a well spent two hours..Score: 5/5
