In 1974, Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” made its stage debut, combining poetry, dance and music, and most significantly, placing the black female experience center stage. In lyrical, honest, angry, funny and tender language, Shange’s “colored girls” evoked the feelings woven into the fabric of black female life in America. Within two years, the play became a Broadway sensation, won an Obie and Tony Award, and would eventually be produced in regional theaters throughout the country. Now, thirty six years later, filmmaker Tyler Perry adapts this landmark work for the big screen, integrating the vivid language of Shange’s poems into a contemporary narrative that explores what it means to be a woman of color - and a woman of any color - in this world. FOR COLORED GIRLS weaves together the stories of nine different women – Joanna, Tangie, Crystal, Gilda, Kelly, Juanita, Yasmine, Nyla and Alice – as they move into and out of one another’s existences; some are well known to one another, others are as yet strangers. Crises, heartbreaks and crimes will ultimately bring these nine women fully into the same orbit where they will find commonality and understanding. Each will speak her truth as never before. And each will know that she is complete as a human being, glorious and divine in all her colors.
About existence from the perspective of 20 nameless black females. Each of the women portray one of the characters represented in the collection of twenty poems, revealing different issues that impact women in general and women of color in particular.

Complete Ignornace!Ignorance Ignorance Ignorance!! That is all I am reading from most of the reviews for this movies. Probably most of the people who rated this film didn't even watch it but said it was racist because of the title!! Half of you I bet don't even know the meaning of racism. Also just because the title says colored does not mean it's racist. Also just because it's a film cast with all black women and men does not mean it only applies to Black people. Most films in Hollywood are cast with white people and it doesn't mean the story behind the movie can't relate to people of all races! As a person who actually saw the film I thought it was a very deep emotional movie and not all things I agreed with. Granted abuse does happen amongst women at the hands of men...it may have depicted black men as being very evil in the film and for ignorant ppl like most of the idiots who wrote a review for this movie they will view it as saying all black men are abusive and no good! But that's not how I viewed the movie at all. It told a story about the many issues that women face in this world...and we should look at this as relating to all women no matter there race. The next step would be to show what type of abuse men face in this world because many men are victims to, it's just that to many people are to ignorant to recognize it!!.Score: 3/5

Great movieVery good movie, good plot, and it tells you what you already know but it's good to hear it from a movie ... For those who said it was racist, or anything negative pertaining to race I personally think if he wanted it to be about another race then he would have added it to the movie. More than a MovieThis is a movie geared toward African AMerican women. Not to be racially dividing but if you are not a African American women this movie may not touch you as much. I personally appreciate this movie. Not only was it intense and raw, but it had great acting in it from Phylicia Rashad to Kerry Washington.
