Javier, a Sad Clown, finds work in a circus where he befriends an outlandish cast of characters, including the brutish Happy Clown, Sergio, who humiliates Javier daily in the name of entertainment. Javier falls deeply in love with Natalia and tries to rescue her from her cruel and violent husband, unleashing Sergio’s jealousy. Italiano Guerra civile spagnola. Durante uno spettacolo circense, i due pagliacci in scena vengono arruolati a combattere nell'esercito repubblicano. Uno di loro viene arrestato e costretto a lavorare per lo stato. Il giovane figlio Javier organizza un attentato per vendicarsi dei soprusi subiti ma, nello scoppio, muore anche il padre. Da grande, sotto la dittatura di Franco, viene assunto come Pagliaccio triste in un circo, dove incontra Sergio, il suo alter ego sorridente, con il quale dovrà dividere il palco e l'amore per l'acrobata Natalia.
