Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, William Holden and Faye Dunaway lead an all-star cast in this suspenseful epic. A dedication ceremony at the world's tallest skyscraper turns into a high-rise catastrophe when a defective wire causes an electrical flare-up. Within minutes the gala event explodes into a hellish inferno, as a raging fire traps society's most prominent citizens on the top floor.

At the opening party of a colossal—but poorly constructed—skyscraper, a massive fire breaks out, threatening to destroy the tower and everyone in it.

A drivin movie classicSaw it when at the drivin in 1974. It was a thiiller no question about if; but if did have some sappy scenes e.g., William Holden's and Susan Blakley's characters doing the "soul brother" handshake--give me a break!!! To see a much younger Susan Flannery (The Bold and the Beautifully) was very pleasing on the eyes---she as a hottie!!! It's also a college course of what faulty wiring can do a to building. Steve did his homework in terms of knowing the particulars of mateirals which causes toxic fumes, procedues in command and how to think on your feet. Firmen of all ages and experience would appreciate this movie..Hawk19539Score: 5/5

My review of Pauline Kaels' reviewI'm sure her real review was much longer and more cohesive than the sentence we get here which is more disjointed than any aspect or scene from this movie she didn't like . "The movie doesn't stick together in ones' head " - Can someone please help translate that sentence ? or " like a junky fairground show " - um anybody ? " A chamber of horrors with skeletons that jump up " . um really anybody want to take that one ? Pauline , for crying out loud , its Irwin Allen creator of the terrible Lost In Space , praise him for getting Newman , Mcqueen and Vaughn in the movie and be greatful there was no Bill Mumy or Jonathan Harris cameos ..DanO- the Man In BrownScore: 4/5

Excellent diaster movie highlights the importance of fire safetyFire is certainly not something that can be ignored. This movie displays a building that could have been built safe, but instead safety features were cut in order to save money. Great Firefighting MovieGreat movie with a lot of actual firefighters and firefighting vehicles including era-appropriate American LaFrance , Seagrave and Ford-C Series fire apparatus , including snorkel trucks , which the real San Francisco Fire Department doesn’t have , the movie is about a supposedly inflammable skyscraper that catches on fire during its grand opening night and thousands of people die , sending us good messages about what fire safety looks like when business people cut safety devices out of the construction of skyscrapers and high rise buildings..Calum BenteScore: 5/5
