On their way to Mexico, a mysterious drifter named Paul (Ethan Hawke) and his dog cut through the forgotten town of Denton - a place now dubbed by locals as a "valley of violence." The once popular mining town is nearly abandoned, and controlled by a brash group of misfits and nitwits - chief among them, Gilly (James Ransone) who is the troublemaking son of the town’s unforgiving Marshal (John Travolta). As tensions rise between Paul and Gilly, Denton’s remaining residents, including two bickering sisters (Taissa Farmiga and Karen Gillan), bear witness to an inevitable act of violence that starts a disastrous chain reaction. Only the world-weary Marshal struggles to stop the violent hysteria, but after a gruesome discovery about Paul’s past…there is no stopping the escalation. From writer/director Ti West and Blumhouse Productions, In a Valley of Violence brings absurdist humor and West’s shocking scenes of violence to the Western genre.
The story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town's hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance.

A Waste of time and moneyI never write reviews but this was so terrible I felt an obligation to warn others. I should have listened to the other 1-star reviews. Whatever the director was trying to achieve, he failed--unless he was trying to create a terrible waste of a movie and acting talent. Even as a self-proclaimed B-movie, it fails, especially given the A-list acting talent that the director had to work with. Is this a joke?Throughout this movie, my husband and I kept asking each other, "Is this a joke? Is this a satire and we didn't know it?" The writing is ATROCIOUS, and the acting is EVEN WORSE. What happened to Ethan Hawke and John Travolta that they put their names on this?!.Score: 1/5

Blast of Dark Comedy and Western SizzleEthan Hawks, as usual, knocks it out of the ball park in this exceptional western that ranks as one of the best films of the year. I mean this film takes John Travolta and turns him into a malicious yet funny lawman, that deserves praise all on its own. Overall this film borrows much from John Wick, but I can't help but love it because of just how well it was made. It comes with my highest recommendations..Score: 4/5

Like a Bad Spaghetti Western, But Worse...This movie is absolutely mindless. First, Hawke sets out to avenge the killing of his dog. That's the premise of "John Wick", but neither Hawke nor his character measure up. In fact, I found Hawke's character to be somewhat unbalanced..Score: 1/5
Wanted to like it.The writing and story line were terrible and sadly predictable. The acting and writing progressively became so bad it was pathetic. The sets / the western town was as uninteresting and sterile as the writing. Don't waste your time or money on this..Score: 1/5
Two stars for cimenatography and the dogThis is a half-baked "star vehicle" -- Travolta and Hawke fill some down time by making this B movie, that has more holes in the plot than the swiss cheese at my neighborhood delicatessen. The Travolta character goes from sinister bad guy to Gandhi for no discernible reason, and Hawke's character transforms from formidable violence-dealer to the dopiest ex-Indian fighter in cinema --he camps with a blazing fire a mile out of the town where he enraged several not very nice bad guys. When his dog barks an alarm he tells it to shut up. The script was written on somebody's lunch hour and they made it up as they went along. Much of the acting from the minor players is high school drama stuff, but -- the cimenatorgraphy is sumptuous and that little dog is extraordinary and endearing..Score: 2/5
WhittyThe year for westerns and with a lot of "A Listers" coming out in Hateful 8 & Maginficent 7, it's not shocking to see others making a return to the big screen. Travolta paired with Ethan Hawke is not a bad combination. Of course the movie is slightly predictable, just after the arrival into Denton. It's not bad, it's awful."Bad" is a very low standard of acting and cast or no investment in production values -- not good camera work, cheap sets, poorly constructed and poorly acted. That's "bad". Mr. Hawke has proven himself an exlempary actor. As a period piece it is well represented with decent production values and the camera work is quite good. BUT... but then there's "awful". I've seen high school plays done better than this movie. You're never quite sure if there are trying to pass this off as a comedy through the annoying dialogue, or if it's really just that bad.
