Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run — Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list.

Lots of Action and Good Story-tellingThis may be my favorite example that Tom Cruise is actually able to *act*. In his current superstar status, he gets off on the big-budget action, but in being cast against type I “Collateral,” he turns in an outstanding performance as the soulless villain.
Is also easy to see why Jamie Foxx was nominated for an Oscar for his role; excellent character portrayal. Michael Mann’s creation of the LA-noir tone was a perfect match-up to the story.

Český Zkušený režisér Michael Mann dobře ví, že kombinace horizontálních a vertikálních záběrů shora se nejlépe hodí k charakteru městského urbanismu, který tak bravurně reprezentuje právě akční thriller Collateral. Jak je u Manna zvykem, staví celý film na bipolárním modelu dvou hlavních postav (model známý z Nelítostného souboje atd.), které svede osud či náhoda dohromady a kteří pak tvoří kostru děje. Jejich vztah záhy přeroste v cosi hlubšího a zásadnějšího, což je asi největší devizou všech jeho snímků, které pak stojí v ostrém kontrastu s bezduchou většinou filmů akčního žánru. Nejenom střet dvou odlišných světů, ale i výstižně předvedená anonymní strnulost spícího Los Angeles, megapole, v němž má člověk skutečně tak bezvýznamné postavení, že jeho smrt se v běhu města absolutně nijak neprojeví. Tohle civilizační odcizení městského způsobu života (o němž mluví postava nájemného vraha Vincenta) se dá vnímat jako ústřední myšlenková osa filmu.
